    Favorite Songs / Underappreciated Songs

What are some of your most favorite Nine Inch Nails songs? I think we were all surprised at some of the ones included in peoples "Least Favorite" lists... let see if there are some surprises here. Also... what are some songs you think are underrated and why?

    My favorties:

01] And All That Could Have Been - This song has the tendency to bring me to tears no matter what mood I was in prior to listening to it, it's simply that powerful.

02] The Becoming - I love the industrial edgy-ness of this song coupled with very well oriented lyrics metaphorical yet understanble and easy to relate to in many aspects. My only concern... WHO THE FUCK IS ANNIE!? I assume she's that chick that dumped Trent in college. I bet whenever the Fragile era rolled around and she saw that he was competing with the sun for hottest thing in the solar system she had a bit of regret.

03] The Day the World Went Away - I love this song. It's very versatile... sounds great on piano and the epic riffs, no matter how simplistic create a nice sound. The versatility is the song's ability to sound great not only on the album but even more so live and yet again even more so in the piano (Still) version.

04] Somewhat Damaged - Angry song with a very nice and unique sound that I love. Great way to start out a show, one of my favorite songs live as well. It's a shame I'll never see it performed live as I missed my chance in the 2006 summer amphitheater tour. *cries*

05] Right Where It Belongs - Beautifully depressing song.

06] Eraser - Live. Oh.. My.. God.

07] Reptile - I just love the little sounds and effects on the album and live I love the droning guitar, amazing either live or on the album.

Okay that's quite a few, I better stop or I'll list damn near every song.

  • Hard to pick a favorite track. You know what I'm gonna do ? I'll just say my favorite is the only playing right now: Eraser.

    Other favs:
    - The Fragile (Still): I can "relate" to these lyrics, mostly.
    - The Day The World Went Away (Still / Quiet): The piano part: BEAUTIFUL.
    - Help Me I Am In Hell
    - A Warm Place
    - The Great Below
    - We're In This Together

By the way, in the sentence "Annie, hold a little tighter, I might slip away", Annie refers to a character from the novel "Nausea" by Jean-Paul Sartre. Now, I couldnr't answer the question whether if Annie is the name of some girl Trent used to know.

Some may come as a surprise. But I will note that my favorites do shift, and change over time. Not rapidly, but they still do. So I might be able to re-answer this question in maybe 5 or 6 months... This also coming from someone who's never had the chance to see them live.

Anyway. Never really put too much thought into it. But here's mine. (In no particular order)

The Becoming - I'm still undecided between the Still version of this song, or The Downward Spiral version... Depends on my mood I guess. Anyhow, love the sound of both, some fine writing too.

Everyday Is Exactly The Same - Say what you will about this song. But I've always enjoyed this one. The music itself seems to give off the same feel as the lyrical side of the song. Which, in my case, is extremely relatable. I don't know, I just love it.

The Day The World Went Away (Quiet) - The original was beautiful, as was the Still. But I thought this one to have just the right amount of tweaking to the sound, and a slight change in vocalization... seems to perfect it for me.

The Line Begins To Blur - From the start I've loved this one. A lot of emotion displayed in his vocals, with somewhat of a live(ish) sound. Nice contrast between the verses and the chorus. Another display of his great writing skills.

Right Where It Belongs - Some of Trent's finest writing. A very emotionally gripping peice...

Leaving Hope - Maybe this is surpising? Well, not to me. Was always my favorite on Still. I find it to have the most emotional weight out of all of Reznor's work. Just this music alone is powerful enough to bring tears.

The Fragile - Always really liked this song. Another song where a lot of emotion is shown in the way he sings it. Especially live, my favorite being the CRC Sessions version of the song. Even though I can't exactly relate to the lyrics, it's still incredible writing... almost makes me feel as if I could.

    The list goes on...
    and on...
    and on...
    and on...

But I think I'll stop it at that, or I too, will list every song. As for underrated... Well, lets go with Non-Entity. Simply because I would've liked to have included it in with my favorites list above... :p

    Short and painless:

    1) Happiness in Slavery
    2) Wish
    3) Suck
    4) Please
    5) The day the whole world went away

Might be because I play bass myself, but I love these minimalistic, ultra-groovy bass-riffs in Please, Suck, etc. They are a unique characterisic for NIN-Songs.

  • Mine current favorites are...

    1. Just Like You Imagined(the bass in this is awesome)
    2. The Day the World Went Away
    3. The Great Below
    4. The Wretched
    5. Wish

    Also "Reptile" is way underrated

DragonflyBlade21: A woman has a close male friend. This means that he is probably interested in her, which is why he hangs around so much. She sees him strictly as a friend. This always starts out with, you're a great guy, but I don't like you in that way. This is roughly the equivalent for the guy of going to a job interview and the company saying, You have a great resume, you have all the qualifications we are looking for, but we're not going to hire you. We will, however, use your resume as the basis for comparison for all other applicants. But, we're going to hire somebody who is far less qualified and is probably an alcoholic. And if he doesn't work out, we'll hire somebody else, but still not you. In fact, we will never hire you. But we will call you from time to time to complain about the person that we hired.

It's always changing and there's so many of them, but to pick one that's consistently up there I'd say "Just Like You Imagined"

How can I bite the hand that feeds the strangers all around me?
  • i can't decide for myself, what is better - Just like you imagined or Pilgrimage

I agree with Twelve 21, 'And All That Could Have Been' nearly made me cry when I first heard it. And 'Leaving Hope' too. I don't really know exactly what my fave songs are right now...I'd have to think about it and post it later. =P

    - Burn
    - The Great Below (amazingly intense when I listen to it while actually staring at the sea).
    - Reptile
    - The Frail/The Wretched
    - Everyday is exactly the same (this song got me into NIN! Oh and I also like With teeth)
    - Hurt

Each album is a different world, this is very hard, I'm leaving many meaningful songs out of the list...!

  • Just Like You Imagined - It's just fucking amazing. I honestly can't explain it, I just love this song.

A Warm Place - Capable of bringing me to the verge of tears no matter what mood I'm in...

The Frail - Short and sweet, and amazingly rad towards the end. The deeper notes have actually sent chills down my spine... I love it.

The Fragile - Quite possibly one of the easiest songs to relate to by NIN. And it sounds rad, too.

The Great Below - The bridge (chorus? I dunno) is, like A Warm Place, capable of throwing me into an ironically beautiful stage of depression.

Eraser (Denial; Realization) - I'm honestly not too sure why I love this track, I just do. It's simple, long, and varies enough to keep it entertaining throughout.

Ruiner - I love it? I don't think I need to explain myself. Haha.

Happiness In Slavery - SLAVE SCREAMS! <-- Those two words alone make it fucking rad. Haha.

Something I Can Never Have - Quite possibly the most commonly related to NIN song ever? It's a beautiful song, though.

That's What I Get - I love the music, and the lyrics, again, are very easy to relate to...

Not necessarily my Top 10, but my 10 current favorites, I think... And there is of course, many many others.

  • and all that could have been
