    Best new wave/post-punk/80's bass

These guys bridged the gap between funk and pop with brilliance unmatched.

    who really nailed it?

    name bands.

I say duran duran. because this Save A Prayer is a bad bass line.

ehh it aint all that. gotta leave room to grow right?

  • Well, here is 3 songs with the best bass lines:

    1. Joy Division - Twenty Four Hours
    2. The Cure - Charlotte Sometimes
    3. The Sisters of Mercy - A Rock And A Hard Place

  • I love the bassline in The Lovecats by The Cure and pretty much everything Dave Allen and Gang of Four tuched turned into gold

I love the bass line in Respectable Street by XTC. I like Colin Moulding's bass lines in general, he can be very idiosyncratic in his playing.

    Shine those shoes, Bill!
  • wobble's line on Public Image Ltd.'s "Poptones" is fantastic, especially on Metal Box, where the wide grooves of the 45rpm 12" let the low end throb..

  • China Crisis-African and White and Tears For Fears-Start Of The Breakdown. Also New Order especially on Everything's Gone Green and Temptation and I agree with Duran Duran, Rio is amazing!

Simon Gallup of The Cure pretty outstanding in the field of bass players (Faith,Pornography,Seventeen Seconds all worth a listen)

Jah Wobbles stuff of PiL's Metal Box for sure.

A Certain Ratio impressed me in this regard as well.

  • Interpol-Evil
    Joy Division-Transmission
    and anything by Moving Units!

  • The sons of Japan have the best bass with Mick Karn (for me he's the best bass player). Other great bands with good bass guitar are Simple Minds, Ultravox, Joy Division, Duran Duran and Talk Talk.

  • The Sisters of Mercy - Lucretia My Reflection

that bass line just gets stuck in your head

btw I agree with save a prayer. barry adamson & magazine were also great. post-punk bass lines are often really amazing, and surprisingly easy to play.

Sting's work with the Police, John Taylor in Duran Duran.

As for backing musicians no one can touch Pino Palladino.

  • I have no doubt. The best basslines played Peter Hook (Joy Division, New Order) and Mick Karn (Japan, Rain Tree Crow).

  • Ice Age from Joy Division has a great bassline.
And Fascination Street from the Cure.

  • great bass

    Lie To Me
I don't know if the synths but it's a great one

    and

    Shame On You

and more ! but I don't have them in mind..

Talking Heads - Found A Job

  • peter hook of joy division. turning the bass way up gave them such a unique sound. you need only listen to Candidate for a perfect example of that brilliance.

  • Will Heggie ! Sometimes, Something ; IT'S ALL BUT AN ARK LARK ; Wreckage Of Your Mind ; Hollow Gut ; Shallow, Then Halo ; But I'm not ; Peppermint Pig ; Inside Out ; I Don't Talk to Me ; E.P. Rain ; and so on.

  • Japan's Mick Karn above all. Also Peter Hook of Joy Division/ New Order, Derek Forbes of early Simple Minds and Pino Palladino. I find Mark O'Toole of Frankie Goes To Hollywood quite underrated. As for bass lines, call me mad, but I love "Turn your back on me" by Kajagoogoo. "Christian" by China Crisis has got an amazing bass line too.

"Everyone else, they're just fooling themselves, not you."

What effect created the bassline sound that was found on the following:

    Kajagoogoo 'Too Shy'
Paul Young 'Wherever I Lay My Hat'
    Nik Kershaw 'Faces'

or perhaps best demonstrated by Alan Partridge:
