    Requiem...

    Hello everybody!

I'm the poorest girl in the world, searching for a performance of the uncompleted Requiem of Mozart...
I hope to hear it with my two ears before to die... Don't you?

I saw a brilliant performance of Réquiem executed by OSESP (Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo) and maestro Neschling last december 7, just in my anniversary LOL.

It's incredible. Hear Dies Irae live is better even than sex.

My personal favorite is Harnoncourt's most recent recording of it with his Concentus Musicus, the Arnold Schönberg Choir and and Christine Schäfer, Bernarda Fink, Kurt Streit and Gerald Finley as the soloists. It's less operatic and a tad slower than Harnoncourt's previous Requiems, but very grave, very dramatic - they're using Süssmayr's Requiem completion (as Harnoncourt notes that, while not perfect, there are clearly Mozartian ideas in Süssmayr's completion absent in all other ones, mostly in the bass and choir sections which were always sketeched first by Mozart - germ motives for example, like the bass line in "Agnus Dei" that corresponds to the main motive of the "Introitus") but with the latest corrections from Franz Beyer, most notably a cleaned up, harsh instrumentation that is closer to that of the "Introitus". If this isn't enough to win your over, Christiane Schäfer's (the soprano) fiancé died weeks prior to the recording, all the pain, all the sorrow in her voice are real. A magical recording.

If anybody is interested, you know. PM.

I saw it done live in Norwich Cathedral I think two years ago, as part of the Norwich festival. Like you sebika I'd always wanted to hear it live, and I wasn't disappointed. hey used an amateur orchestra who did very well and professional soloists, ho were excellent. I've also seen the Mass In C the same way which was a sheer delight.

My favourite Requiem piece is on the Marriner/St Martins Academy version of The Rex Tremendae. I think they used this music in the Amadeus film when Mozart had died and was being taken to the graveyard to be unceremoniously buried. I was moved to shed a tear or two! Wow!

kind regards to all Mozart fans!

If music be the food of love, play on; give me excess of it. (Twelfth Night).

    rex and confutatis

Confutatis and Rex Tremendae are my favorite parts of the requiem, especially, after the movie Amadeus. it is a great piece that takes the soul intor another realm of existence. when I hear it, I feel as if I can feel his soul listening to it too.

  • Confutatis is the best part for me. Especially the beginnig , something incredible.

  • I would like to add that Last.fm users from the UK, US and DE can listen on-demand to all available "Requiem" albums here. If you use the album search with mozart requiem, the results will show with a play button which albums have playable tracks and which do not.

All other users can of course listen to one of the available tag radios, e.g. or maybe simply if they would also like to hear the Requiems of other composers like Verdi, Fauré, Brahms etc.
