  • Best Albums of 2009*

    Dez 31 2009, 18h54 por Kieran0411

    *According to me.

If i've realised one thing this year it's that i'm a little too obsessed with music. Not necessarily a bad thing, but i know it's got to simmer down at some point. This year takes the cake for sure…, as i think this stupidly long list will prove.

Decided not to include a section of albums i didn't like… theres already too many to mention of the good stuff, so what's the point.

    In alphabetical order...

THE STANDOUTS (My absolute favourite albums of 2009)

    Artist: Alexisonfire
    Album: Old Crows/Young Cardinals

Alexisonfire are the quintessential hipster emo/screamo scene kid band-of-choice, and as such i have generally avoided them for years. Was given the album and didn't really give it much play, but the heavy rotation of the 'Young Cardinals' single on the radio eventually hooked me and made me listen again, and this is a great album. I think its funny that the scene kids will have to share their now mainstream band with noobs like me. Ah, i remember when noobs started listening to my bands….

    Artist: Alice in Chains
Album: Black Gives Way To Blue

Alice in Chains and Smashing Pumpkins were my two fave grunge-era bands, so i was more than willing to accept this no matter how average… but it turned out to be exceptionally good, which pushes it up into my standouts. The new singer doesn't add much apart from sounding like Layne Staley, which doesn't interfere with the band's original sound, so they haven't tarnished the band's name in my books, which is always my greatest fear with comebacks like these.

    Artist: The Avett Brothers
Album: I And Love And You

These are the kind of albums i love finding… alt-country gems like this that get overlooked. This album isn't overly serious, consists of beautiful folky melodies and the second half almost breaks into party mode with a few indie rock moments, which for me, gives it a bit of an edge over other alt-country releases this year.

    Artist: Baroness
    Album: Blue Record

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than Red Album. If they improve again over this, holy shit.

    Artist: Black Math Horseman
    Album: Wyllt

Melodic stoner/doom with female vocals…. yes please. Apart from that, its also really, really, really good.

    Artist: Converge
    Album: Axe To Fall

Hardcore+Punk+Metal… sounds like the usual recipe for disaster, but this is so far above average its not even funny. The final two tracks on this album show they could probably make any genre of music and still be exceptional.

    Artist: Dark Castle
    Album: Spirited Migration

Awesome female metal vocals for this exceptional sludge metal album, a winner with me.

    Artist: Dinosaur Jr.
    Album: Farm

Aware of the slew of highly rated reviews for this, i decided to check it out. Definitely deserves the acclaim. Fantastic guitar record.

    Artist: dredg
Album: The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion

My first impressions of this were a mixed bag. On one hand there were some amazing songs with amazing lyrics, like 'Pariah', or 'I Don't Know' - and then there were some others that sound straight up top 40 punk-pop, particularly 'Information' that really put me off. But it was one of those albums i just had to keep listening to, now i really love the whole thing.

    Artist: Ha Ha Tonka
Album: Novel Sounds of the Nouveau South

    So damn good.

    Artist: The Handsome Family
    Album: Honey Moon

    Aw mah gaaaawd yeh.

    Artist: Kylesa
    Album: Static Tensions

Fuck me, this is fucking killer. One of my favourite albums ever!

    Artist: Little Birdy
    Album: Confetti

I've got a soft spot for Little Birdy, they write great pop songs and they've thankfully returned to their original country inspired sound, and mixed in a bit of white R&B for good measure. There's not a bad song on the album.

    Artist: Mastodon
    Album: Crack The Skye

One of my favourite bands. Crack The Skye is definitely their most cohesive, focussed album, resulting in less tracks and longer songs. I don't think i could choose a favourite album of theirs, they're all different and excellent.

    Artist: Metric
    Album: Fantasies

These songs really stood out to me this year, amongst all the other indie pop… fun songs.

    Artist: Neko Case
    Album: Middle Cyclone

Neko Case rules my world. I LOVE HER!

Artist: The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
Album: The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
Album: Higher Than the Stars [EP]

Another totally perfect record, quickly became one of my favourites ever. Totally my exact kind of pop-rock record. Elements of My Bloody Valentine, The Strokes, The Stone Roses, The Smiths and Silversun Pickups all come to mind when listening to it. Pure bliss.

They also released an EP, Higher Than the Stars, which was a bit disappointing only because the songs on it all sound kinda similar to other songs on the eponymous LP.

Artist: Ryan Bingham & the Dead Horses
    Album: Roadhouse Sun

    Another amazing alt-country discovery.

    Artist: Scale The Summit
    Album: Carving Desert Canyons

Instrumental, post-rock, progressive, with elements of metal… i think this is my favourite instrumental album ever. I don't really enjoy instrumental albums that much. There are a lot of amazing bands out there who choose this path, but my main complaint is that, for me, it just gets boring after awhile. This album never get boring and is a total blast to listen to.

    Artist: Silversun Pickups
    Album: Swoon

Carnavas is up there with my most favourite perfect albums ever, and i knew it would be a hard act to follow. No, its not as good as Carnavas. But this is still really, really good. I really love this album and it's still miles better than most stuff around at the moment, it's just that Carnavas set the bar too high and i find it hard to get too excited about this.

    Artist: a textbook tragedy
Album: Rain City State Of Mind [EP]

I have absolutely listened the dog shit out of their EP this year. I can't get enough. Something about this EP clicks with me more than the 2008 Intimidator LP did, i can't put my finger on it. It totally obliterates anything in its path, and makes it hard to downgrade to other similar hardcore technical math-metalcore bands out there… this is as good as it gets.

    Artist: Those Darlins
    Album: Those Darlins

    Country + Punk + Girls = win.

    Artist: Tucker B's
Album: Nightmares In The Key Of (((((Wow)))))

Well, finally an Aussie band that totally delivered. These guys are so slept on, its criminal. I guess that's how they can manage to produce yet another album of such sheer brilliance, because there's absolutely no pressure. I thought 2005's Chubby LP was amazing, and now this, the songs are still as punchy, catchy, unpretentious and bizarre as ever. I've always kinda thought they sound like Pixies meets Radiohead sans thom yorke. I dunno, they're just the Tucker B's. Fucking legends.

Album: True Blood - Music From The HBO Original Series [Soundtrack]

One of the best soundtracks ever! Perfect for any mood or occasion. Try it out!

  • Die Wirkung von lastfm bei mir... / the effect of lastfm on me...

...is to feel like 12 or 13 again. At that time i started to file the music i was listening. Who was singing? Who composed that song? Who was playing? You didn't hear that much on radio. I made my own charts. though i wouldn't let you listen to some of that songs, it changed my musical taste bit by bit, as i began to understand this musicbusiness. I allways complain about few information on lastfm about singer and composer. But this is part of our work as user. So the next thing will be to do some more tracklists and to put some information on the songs as far is i know them.

The final broadcast of 2009. It’s been a great year for electronic music, particularly the stuff of a “darkfloor” nature. To see off the year in style, for our 52nd showcase, direct from the Russian Federation: Vadz.

    SHOWCASE
    Vadz
born Vadim Savchenko in Taganrog, South of Russia in 1980. Whilst growing up Vadz found he could express himself with painting and photography and by age 15 had realised that in music he’d found his calling. At the very beginning,

there were no parties, records or techno; I was just looking for a way to express my non-ordinaries
It was his non-standard view of simple things that provided his conception of musical originality and independence. That was the beginning. From school discos, to local parties, it led to records, synthesizers and sending hordes of demos, to releases, and gigs all over Russian and beyond.

Currently Vadz has 4 physical releases (Television Records and LaBrat Audiochemicals) and an ever growing amount of digital releases (WIDE, Digital Distortions, Militant Science etc…, check his discography). His releases are supported by loads of Russian techno DJs, as well as international names like Dave Clarke, Radioactive Man, Mark Hawkins, Shelley Parker.

Vadz is devoted to (as he describes it) fat ‘proper’ techno and electro styles that use to rock the dancefloors in late 90s and early zeros. No shuffle-trank minimal, no youngsters-on-speed schranz.

In late 2007 Vadz set up the Russian-Techno.com netlabel to show the world the power and quality of his native producers’ output with good, original and interesting music.

Fuck crisis, boycott the industry! Free music distribution is the only future – that’s what we believe in!

  • Mixtape: Chocolate Grinder 24 - "Humor Belongs In Music"

    Dez 10 2009, 23h05 por FilmoreHolmes

    Alan Ranta sez:
Frank Zappa posed the question, and provided the answer. Does humor belong in music? Obviously, I think so, and after you hear this absurd and occasionally surreal mix, there is a reasonable chance you will too. Granted, this mix is not exactly a face-melting music tour-de-force from start to finish, but that is also part of the point. If not a life-changing catharsis, music, at the very least, can be fun.

There’s a lot of West coast flavor on this one, featuring four Vancouver acts alone. The Fugitives throw down a whimsical spoken-word interpretation of music history, while the fabulously named Phatty Phatty & The Roaches live up to their hype. The all-ages collective Duplex! takes a turn toward the Talking Heads on their ode to sandwiches, and if you haven’t heard of Dan Mangan yet, prepare to see his name popping up everywhere you look from now on. As Mugatu would say, "he’s so hot right now."

You will also likely remember when and where you were when you first heard the post-ironic ballad from electro princess Adira Amram for the rest of your life. Adira recently landed back home in New York after from her now-infamous tour with Kid Koala’s The Slew. Every night, her intimate rendition of "Mom Song" brought the house to a standstill, followed by sporadic tucking and rolling.

That said, I’m not sure if tracks five through eight are supposed to be comical, and Mangan’s "Robots" is more cute-funny than spit-take, knee-slapping, laugh-out-muthafckn’-loud funny. But hopefully they will at least bring a smile to your face. People tend to like Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, getting drunk off leaks in the ceiling, and hearing children giggle, so I think I’ve got my bases covered.

    Track Listing:
    01. The Fugitives - "Music (Live)" (Find Me EP)
    02. Adira Amram - "TocarMom Song" (Hot Jams For Teens)
    03. Phatty Phatty & The Roaches - "Stanley" (Stanley)
    04. Duplex! - "That’s How We Make A Sandwich" (Worser)
    05. Why? - "Even The Good Wood Gone" (Eskimo Snow)
    06. Alpha Channel - "Mexican Space Program" (Exotic Tales)
    07. Bassnectar - "Window Seat" (Cozza Frenzy)

Hot on the heels of the 50th show (with Wu-Tang - Enter the Dubstep), this week we have the Berlin based producer T.R.O.

    SHOWCASE
After growing up in Bayreuth (the Richard Wagner town) T.R.O. moved to Berlin, diving head first into it's techno scene. Soon after, he became interested in the much smaller but very friendly local breaks scene, especially the legendary Dangerous Drums nights. Now addicted to this sound, his own productions changed from techno to breakbeat, too. In 2004 his début release "Rec" appeared on the Dangerous Drums compilation "It's a Berlin thing 3" and in 2005 he got the first of several tracks signed on Dr. Schmidt's label Maschinen Musik (Dr. Schmidt and his label were featured on MANTIS 008). While he still enjoys the full range of breakbeat music, increasingly he's become interested in other broken beat styles, primarily dubstep and garage and their influence is being absolved into his productions.

T.R.O.'s own label Furioso is dedicated to the idea of merging breaks, dubstep, 2step, and bassline house. With artists like Sharps, Blackmass Plastics, KingThing, and Nicolas Bourbaki it has quickly become a melting pot for future bass music.

    REST OF THE SHOW
Usual 1st hour hosting duties from yours truly, DVNT, presenting my current crop of darkfloor electronica.

MANTIS is syndicated live to The Drome within Second Life. If you are a Second Life user, please head here for more info or teleport.

  • A new album from Soleil Vert in 2009!

    Nov 28 2009, 17h59 por WaveRiderMusic

A fourth Soleil Vert album in 2009!

"Génétiquement modifié is now available in full on last.fm!

As a concept album about genetically modified food, Génétiquement modifié is made of interrupted sequences, spliced fragments, all modified in the lab at the cellular level usign foreign dna... translated into sound manipulation and textures.

Heavy bass pedal notes under harsh percussion and flickering synths. Tangerinesque monosynth solos over a minimal tapestry. Glitch, ambient, minimal, this album is a departure from the techniques Soleil Vert used before. This is Soleil Vert, but Genetically Modified!

Leaning towards harsh idm beats at first, with TocarPremière mutation opening in the vein of Autechre and all, with a very classic industrial sound, then going towards TocarPoison, one of the very strong tracks in defining Soleil Vert's sound for this album. After some more broken beats, TocarDocteur Frankenfood appears in a more melodic fashion reminiscent of Jean-Michel Jarre... Other notable nod to the past is TocarSynthétique versus organique giving a flasback to Tangerine Dreams fans...

Some fresh sounding takes on classic feels that can please fans of Pink Floyd to King Crimson, with some new territories explored along the lines of ambient and industrial mixed together in various proportions, "Génétiquement modifié" is a must try for discerning contemporary instrumental electonica listeners.
