• If metal wouldn't exist...

I think this group will accept this thread with interest and without messages like: "that's stupid, everything else is bullshit, go fuck yourself!" because there are a bit more open-minded people there (at least should be, naturally), so i decided to ask everyone who bothers reading this.

Imagine situation if metal wouldn't exist. What kind of music would be your favorite and most listened then? Think about it, at least for fun. (Of course styles like "hard rock" or something doesn't count since it's not really much of a difference)

Mine's would probably be various subgenres of Jazz, and some progressive music.

  • Probably Progressive Rock, as I listen to nowadays.

  • Post-rock, folk, neoclassical, progressive rock

Alternative/Progressive/Experimental Rock, Punk, Industrial and Alternative Hip Hop. Basically all the stuff I listen to now besides Metal XD

As wierd as it sounds though, I don't know if I would be as openminded about music if I didn't listen to Metal. I mean it's the genre that really got me interested in the technical side of music rather than rudimentary rhythms and vocals, since listening to Metal I've found myself more able to appreciate non-pop music genres such as Folk, Classical and Jazz that before I had no real interest in (I still need to listen to more of the afformentioned genres, I feel like such a pleb D: ). I mean that's not to say without Metal I wouldn't have been able to appreciate them at all, but it would be a far steeper learning curve.

Hmmm. Rock, soundtracks and music from anime.
And I'd be waiting for metal to be invented, I'd have to happen sooner or later.

  • I completely agree with you "LouIsImmortal" and i feel kinda same...

    Punk and blues.

  • Alternative Rock, Progressive Rock, probably some Punk.

  • Hm...

Its hard, because I love metal so much, but in general I listen to so many kinds of metal AND rock, so I would probably listen to whatever was similar and available, be it alternative or prog or whatever..and I would have the other things I lean towards...a mix of stuff like Massive Attack, Qntal, David Bowie and past artists like Edith Piaf, Billie Holliday, and big band tunes as well as a dash of Texas blues/soul, since I grew up with stuff like Stevie Ray Vaughan. I would find something. :)

Don't mistake my endurance for hospitality.

I dunno. Maybe some industrial, some punk, some classic rock, some old country... basically all the non-metal stuff I listen to anyway.

Here is a list of not-metal-related genres (and artists I like in them) you would probably find (amongst others) atop my charts were there no metal:

    Alternative rock (Failure, Pixies, R.E.M.)
Blues music (Lead Belly, Mississippi John Hurt)
    Classic rock (Beatles, Doors, Yardbirds)
Classical music (Edvard Grieg, Ludwig van Beethoven)
Electronic music (Daft Punk, Massive Attack, Prodigy)
Film music (Basil Pouledoris, Ennio Morricone, Howard Shore)
Flamenco music (Eric Vaarzon Morel, Rodrigo y Gabriela)
    Folk music (Clannad, Willie Nelson)
Folk punk (Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly, Meat Puppets)
Folk rock (Blackmore's Night, Boudewijn de Groot, Neil Young)
Gothic rock (Inkubus Sukkubus, Sisters of Mercy)
Indie rock (Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs, Radar Bros.)
    Instrumental rock (Mason Williams, Shadows)
Jazz music (Jerry Martin, Miles Davis, Return to Forever)
    Progressive rock (Marillion, Pink Floyd)
    Psychedelic rock (Hawkwind, Jefferson Airplane)
Punk rock (Dead Kennedys, Misfits, Ramones)
Video game music (Kenji Yamamoto, Koji Kondo)

Quite varied, as you can see! :-p

  • Progressive rock, alternative rock, maybe punk rock and even hip-hop.

  • Obviously hardcore punk. I listen to it more than metal anyway.

  • Same stuff I like now, minus the metal. :P so mostly Indie Rock, Progressive Rock, Psychedelic Rock, some Grunge type stuff, Classical, Jazz Fusion, Symphonic, etc...
