Not all fanpeople are squealing idiots with no lives. If you're a mature fanboy or fangirl, join.
Yes, we are fanboys and fangirls. But we also have lives and maturity, and we're sick of the popular public image we get.
We may gush about our obsessions, but not to the exclusion of everything else, and we don't immediately make an enemy of anyone who dislikes said obsessions.
We may swoon a little (or a lot...) or hyperventilate or talk a mile a minute when in full-on fan mode, but we don't get out of control and refrain from doing such things when we're not in private or among close, understanding friends, since that just makes us look like idiots.
We might, perhaps, harbor crushes on the people with whom our fandom rests, fantasize about meeting them or even *gasp!* hope to have relationships with folks who look or act like them. But we realize that unless we're a freak one-in-a-million occurrence like Katie Holmes, we're not in any way going to have any kind of relationship with the people themselves, and any attempts to do so will most likely result in restraining orders.
We enjoy reading and listening to interviews with the people in whom we are interested, but we have lives of our own and do not wish to live vicariously through our obsessions.
Most importantly, our lives do not revolve around our obsession. In fact, our "obsession" is really more of a fervent interest, and while it may take a prominent place in our lives, we know how to balance it with our family and friends, school/work, and hobbies. It's just another interest, no more important than anything else that piques our curiosity.
So please, don't judge all us fanpeople by the squealing, crying, sign-waving people you'd see on MTV. They are, in fact, a minority. We're just like everyone else, really, we just may be a bit more...passionate than the average person. ;)
