The Future of Last.fm Radio APIs

  • Brazil

    I'm new to last.fm, and I was using the service without knowing that it was going to be a paid service.
    I started using not because someone recommended to me, but because i've seen so many people using this, that I decided to get into this.
    Well, I realized that, all my friends that use the service, are going to cancel their subscription, because 3 Euros /month, is not that cheap for us, here in Brazil, or it's not worth for this. Then probably the company will loose more than just the 3 euros for the subscription, they will loose also because people from the countries that have to pay, won't access site, and of course, the sponsored links and banners.
    Well, this won't change nothing for the paid thing decision, is just and outflow.
    Thanks!

    the music industry(the major labels) force them to do so by their licensing restrictions. I think if it would go the last.fm way, listening to the radio would be free forever :)

    The new Radio API is now officially available and documented for you, so check here for more info:

    * Radio API Overview
    * radio.getPlaylist
    * radio.tune

    This is great to know... but...

    I noticed that it said in the overview, "You may not use our api on mobile phones"...

    There isn't even a line that says we can contact partnersATlast.fm anymore.. So there isn't any room to chat any more?

    So what will happen to the official iphone/android client, and hobby apps for other mobile phones.

  • If Mobbler goes then I will never purchase another subscription from you PERIOD

    For now I will be holding off until I know more.

    Out of interest, what is the difference between using Mobbler over a WiFi connection and using the official client on a PC? It's not like there are ads on the official client or anything of the like, and most of the features of the client appear in Mobbler. I can appreciate not streaming over 3G, that seems reasonable, but why do we have to use official clients? With regards in particular to official clients, you provide an iPhone client but don't provide a Symbian client, so essentially I can stream for free if I have an iPhone but not if I have any other phone, is that what is being proposed? If that is the case, then why not just partner up with the popular apps on other platforms? Would that not be cheaper and easier?

    How about making your contracts 'open' so we can see who it is that's screwing us over here?

    "..The radio API requires authentication..",
    "..3. Request authorization from the user..
    Your application needs to open a web browser and send the user to last.fm/api/auth ..." - Does that mean, that everytime a (subscribed) user wants to use my Desktop-Application-Radio-Player he/she will have to authorize the Player to stream radio ??That's pretty annoying, isn't it?

    it's like all the other api methods I guess....auth only once, then store the session ;)

    Maybe - So, if you're right, i have a great idea: Why not force 3rd-Party-Client-Developers to add 'Buy Track/Album'-Links into their clients such that Last.FM gets the money - I think, THAT would be even more fair ;)

    If you contact us, we're more than happy to consider that option for you.

    But you'll still have to be a subscriber to use it in US, UK and Ger, just as you will if you use the official player. Time to let everyone know without doubt that the official player will only play to subscribers regardless the country of residence. Let's avoid all this confusion.

    We have grandfathered Mobbler and Pocket Scrobbler into the new radio API. However, at this time we're not able to offer mobile streaming to any other clients.

    Until now, i didn't use the authenticate-apicalls - how long is this session valid? it says something about infinite lifetime - is this really so? or does it mean 'infinite each time my application launches?'

  • Free trial period???

    Since 8/06 I've been listening.
    Allof a sudden you call it a trial period!!
    Bye, bye Last.fm
    This sucks!

  • FREE radio!?

    Please explain - Why should users pay for listening to artists that posted their music on this site for FREE (free full track listening and free downloads) ?

    Does part of my $3 per month go somehow to the artist / label that posted their music for FREE ??

    Please, explain !

  • Someone has to pay...

    I'm lost to believe that anyone really thinks €3 a month is a lot of money for the service you get from last FM - I've visited 36 countries and in most of them you can't even buy a beer for €3, let alone a CD.

    By definition you've been able to afford >€400 for a PC or >€100 for a mobile phone - or at least some punitive contract that costs you that much - so how come you're too tight to stump up a measly €3 a month for all the music you like? Come on folks, get real, stop whining, and pay for a service that's far better value than a trip to McDonald's.

  • Meh, and to think I was going to subscribe to last.fm
    Thanks for nothing.

    now something i dont understand: if i subscribe will i get to use mobbler to stream radio stations again? Or is it so that mobile streaming is gone for ever?

    As far as I know, in the European Union you can't charge something for a service in one country, and charge a different price in another. There was a furore over iTunes pricing in the UK and Apple had to adjust it. I seriously doubt that it is legal to charge other EU countries for something that is free in the UK and Germany. The EFF should look into this.
    Hmm gotta admit that i would be indeed curious to see their decision, but i believe conclusion would be as you say. As for current heading on last.fm ... well S.U.C.K.S, but oh well understandable. Just shame to see such an awesome project go down the road... More ppl will turn into illegal way of listening/getting music. I'll miss last.fm best feature.

    As this thread has degenerated into a discussion about our recent changes to the radio, as opposed to the API, I'm going to lock this thread now.
