Covers which are better than the original

The topic title says it all...post some examples!

    i go first:

adam green - what a waster (original: the libertines)
nirvana - the man who sold the world (david bowie)
faith no more - war pigs (black sabbath)
tool - no quarter (led zeppelin - the tool version is longer and sounds more modern)

    Hmmmm

I know some people may not like it but in my opinion Placebo's cover of The Smiths 'Bigmouth Strikes Again' is even better than the original. Placebo's style of music seems to suit the song's lyrics much better.

Elliott Smith - Supersonic (originally by Oasis)
Ryan Adams - Wonderwall (also Oasis)

...oh, and of course Jeff Buckley 'Hallelujah' (Leonard Cohen)

these green eyes - hey jealousy (original: the gin blossoms)
better than ezra - use me (bill withers)
finger eleven - walking in my shoes (depeche mode; theirs is pretty sweet, too :P)

i absolutely agree with elliott smith and jeff buckley. "bigmouth strikes again" is one of my alltime-favorites, it kicks me everytime i hear it...but only the original smiths version. the placebo version is good but it sounds too modern to me.
ryan adams...hmm...i don't like him, don't know why.

  • the cradle of bad taste

travis - hit me baby one more time (original: britney spears)

Is this the place that I've been dreaming of?
  • aerogramme - thriller (mic. jackson)

completly different music, same text, really great

Damnit I can't believe I forgot! Hehe I listen to it so much I've almost forgotten it's a cover. Saw it live too. :-D

Yeah I think I might marginally prefer the original 'Bigmouth...'after listening a few times to them both in the last few days. I'm not a massive Ryan Adams fan in general, really haven't heard much, but his version of Wonderwall sounds brilliant, especially because the original was sooo amazing but sounds over-played now.

Under Pressure - My Chemical Romance and The Used [Queen]
Sweet Dreams - Marilyn Manson [Eurythmics]
    20th Century Boy - Placebo [T.Rex]
I love a lot of the 'Tainted Love' covers, but especially the Social Distortion version.

Fiona Apple - Across The Universe (The Beatles)

How was that not mentioned already^?
Yo La Tengo - Little Honda (Beach Boys)
Freddie White - Po-jama People (Frank Zappa)
^At least I think it's a Zappa song. If anyone else is a fan of Freddie White, let me know.

The Ataris - Boys Of Summer (Don Henley Cover)
Faith No More - Easy (don't know, but better than the original ^^)
Deftones & Onelinedrawing - No Ordinary Love (Sade Cover)
Dover - So Lonely (Police Cover. ok thats not better, but a good cover)
Leatherface - Message In A Bottle (don't know)
Pig Destroyer - Burning Of Sodom (Dark Angel Cover)

  • Nirvana not bettered Oculusch, by Tori (gotta big d###) Amosquito

Here's some more you may have forgotten:

    1) The Vines - Ms. Jackson
    (Outkast original was total crap!)

    2) Johnny Cash - Personal Jesus
    (Depeche's mode was too industrial)

    3) Limp Bisket - Faith
(Blows George-Wham-Michael guitar strummyness right away)

Good girls swallow, bad girls gargle :)
  • A few more I just remembered - I should go to bed really :((

    4) Jane's Addiction - No Rain
(Blind Melon is good, but J/A is better and live)

    5) Magnet - Lay Lady Lay
(Bob Dylan sounds too nasal - blow ya nose hippy!)

    6) Age of Chance - Kiss
(Lucky if you've heard it, better than prawn/Prince)

I'm quite pleased and chuffed with myself now, I feel a warm glow of smugness growing.

Good girls swallow, bad girls gargle :)
  • ...and

for Warpigs, Evon - I'd take the Cardigans' Version

Wasn't Tricky's Black Steel an NWA cover. That's surely up there.

And on an "as good as" basis I like The Devine Comedy's version of Ride's wonderful "Vapour Trail"

I Monster - Daydream in Blue (original: Gunter Kallman Choir - Daydream I think)
    Party Animals - Atomic (Blondie)
Scooter - Weekend (Earth & Fire)
Brooklyn Bounce - Club Bizarre (U96)
A Perfect Circle - Imagine (John Lennon) -- it has a much darker feeling to it. They also covered Led Zeppelins 'When the levee breaks', but I prefer Led Zeppelins song in this case.
    Do - Heaven (Brian Adams)
Whitney Houston - I will always love you (Dolly Parton)
Jim Carey - Somebody to love (Jefferson Airplane)
Within Temptation - Running up that hill (Kate Bush)
    K's choice & Anouk - I alone (Live)
Nirvana - Where did you sleep last night (Leadbelly)
Oops, I did it again (all versions are better than Britney's)
Robbie Williams - Back for Good (Take That)
Sublime - Gin & Juice (Snoop Dogg) -- not better, but very funny if you know the original
Tenacious D - Marijuannaville (Jimmy Buffet - Margarittaville) -- more or less a cover
Wet wet wet - Love is all around me (The Troggs)
Vierus - Streets of London (Sinead O'Connor?)
Postmen & Def Rhymz - De Bom (Doe Maar)
Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal (Michael Jackson)
Anathema - Better off dead (Bad Religion)
Cradle of Filth - Fear of the Dark (Iron Maiden)
    Goldfinger - 99 red balloons (Nena - 99 red balloons & 99 Luftballons)
Guano Apes - Big in Japan (Alphaville)
Jimi Hendrix - Star Spangled Banner
New Found Glory - Hit me baby one more time (Britney Spears)
Me first & the gimme gimmes - Uptown Girl (Billy Joel)

There are probably more, but these are all I can think of. Definitely not all 'Indie and Alternative', but that doesn't matter ^^
