I like The Legacy and Low quite a bit. Testament are really just more frustrating than anything else; they have their moments but they also have albums like Practice What You Preach, which I absolutely hate with a fiery passion.

I still like them much more than Death Angel and Annihilator though.

  • agree with Lopez except for the testament part where i agree with grandmagus.

  • People say Testament's first album is their best, does it really count as good though?

I'd still say so, though it's a bit overrated even for the Bay Area. It has definitely the strongest riffs in the band's entire history, excellent lead guitar, and while the production isn't that good, it's still adequate and the band's energy comes through well.

Honestly, I don't think it has anything on Forbidden's Twisted Into Form or either Exodus' or Vio-lence's debuts, but I still like it.

    "The Legacy" is very good.
I didn't hate "The New Order" either, but I haven't listened to that albums in 5 years or such, so can't say.
Most other Testament work are weak, especially "Practice What You Preach" which is, as some M-A reviewer says, "epitome of pussy thrash".

testament is better at groove than at thrash.

  • I think the first two Testament albums are awesome, especially The Legacy. Practice What You Preach is weak except for a couple of songs. They go up and down quite a bit after that, usually with at least one or two great songs per album though. Skolnick's leads are some of the best in all of thrash. Still, I can see why some people don't like Testament very much, what with how much melody is in their riffs etc... I like 'em a lot though - one of the first five or ten metal bands I got into (probably because of all that melody, eh?!) so I'll always be a big fan.

Oh, I gave most of Death Angel's discography a listen recently, too. Their debut is *great* but everything after that is average or worse.

I think Testament was one of the first thrash bands I listened to (thanks to my brother) after the Big Four, which is maybe why I still have a soift spot for the band. Even though I can recognize how uneven a lot of their discography is.

Still though, this song rips like a motherfucker:

Agreed on Death Angel. Their debut is alright, but man I could totally do without anything else they've ever done. Never really got why they were one of the more highly regarded Bay Area bands either.

  • because they were really young at the time. kind of wonder kids or something.

in general ive kinda moved away from the bay area sound. None of my absolute favorite thrash bands are from that area.

  • I don't think I've ever listened to Testament, and I honestly can't say I feel either the urge or the need to!

  • The only Testament album I've fully listened to so far is The Gathering. I heard a lot of praise for it, but I found it to be really average. Not necessarily bad, just kinda boring and unworthy of all the praise it gets.

I've heard good things about their first two albums, so I might check those out at some point, but I'm no particular rush to do so.

Yeah, awesome punky thrash; "Terror And Submission" is even better.

  • I've mentioned it before, need to mention it again: Shah's "Beware" is KILLER Russian thrash. I guess I'm pretty lucky to have scored it on vinyl seeing as it doesn't seem to have been issued on CD (badly needs a reissue), so this is probably the only time I'll actually suggest people download something. The general quality of the riffs is very impressive, especially for a debut. Think "Beneath the Remains" and "Eternal Nightmare" quality. Awesome stuff!

first album, its a classic, and their best

  • I just got Immaculate's Thrash, Kill and Destroy and it's pretty decent for a 2000s thrash band. It might look like a typical modern poser thrash album, but it's pretty off the wall in places, even slightly Holy Terror-esque in parts. Worth checking out.

  • I only have Immaculate's Atheist Crusade, but it's a pretty good record as well.

They covered Fates Warning's The Apparition on that album, and it's actually pretty good (although nothing when compared to the original).

  • Can I get some black thrash recommendations?

The inner machinations of my mind are an enigma.

Let's bond over how awesome Merciless' The Treasures Within is.

This album rips it up. It does have some more mid-paced riffs/sections than the debut did, but the band pulls it off well, because those sections are well done and contrast well with the band's trademark, vicious high-speed death/thrash metal. The production is one of the weaker ones from Sunlight Studios, but it's not all that bad, and the songs are once again really well done throughout.

Sacrifice is ultimate Canadian Thrash band. Killer riffs, man.
"Forward to Termination", "Apocalypse Inside", Soldiers of Misfortune" and "The Ones I Condemn" are all excellent.
