• Thrash metal

As the title suggests, a thread about thrash metal. Possibly the most important subgenre of metal, what with the whole spawning black metal and death metal thingy.

So, discuss thrash metal; the bands you like, the bands you hate, what you enjoy about the genre, what you don't like about the genre, bands or albums you find to be underrated or overrated etcetera etcetera.

I'm not the biggest thrash maniac out there, but I like some of it. Early Sodom, first Exumer, 2 first Anthrax and of course Bonded by Blood is good stuff.

And i fucking hate bands like Gama Bomb and Municipal Waste. Happy-go-lucky-thrash....

  • Slayer's first two albums, particularly Hell Awaits, are the pinnacle of the genre in my eyes. Mindblowing albums. A few of my other favourites:

Infernäl Mäjesty - None Shall Defy
    Rigor Mortis - Rigor Mortis
    Razor - Evil Invaders
    Overkill - Feel the Fire
    Vio-Lence - Eternal Nightmare

Great stuff, and anyone who doesn't like thrash probably shouldn't have joined this group. ;)

btw I agree about Municipal Waste and co. Fuck that shit.

  • Morbid Saint - Spectrum of Death = brilliant

  • Early Kreator is easily my favorite thrash band. The first couple of albums up to and including Coma of Souls are some of the best, most viscous thrash albums I've heard.
Early Slayer (83 - 86) and 80s Sepultura are worth a mention as well.

  • I agree with pretty much everything posted in here so far.

  • SODOM! Early Destruction and Kreator, S.D.I, Exumer, early works of so called "big three", Dark Angel, Morbid Saint, Sacred Reich, Voivod, Onslaught, Bastardator, Audiopain, Deathhammer etc. etc.

And I don't agree with Municipal Waste thing. First of all they are mainly a crossover band and should be viewed as one.

  • Thrashing mad, we feed the beast
in leather armour we ride the priest!
church is on fire, we're having fun
spikes are shining, we ride the nun!
  • Some german old school Thrash Bands I like: Violent Force, Darkness, Paradox, Risk, Deathrow, Kreator, Sodom, Exumer.....

  • How do you guys feel about crossover?
I've been in a crossover kick the past week or so, and I've come a across a good share of great bands/albums.
Shark Attack (Wehrmacht), Speak English Or Die (S.O.D.) and Convicted (Cryptic Slaughter) are my favorites at the moment.

  • A good friend of mine is obsessed with crossover. Always listening to stuff like Wehrmacht, D.R.I, etc. Good stuff, but I definitely prefer traditional thrash.

  • It's a pretty hit or miss genre.

I'll contribute some more picks later on, but i'd like to point out that not only is Forbidden's Twisted Into Form a criminally underrated album, it also might be one of the best from the Bay Area scene. Excellent riffs, great lead guitar, fantastic drumming, and Russ Anderson's melodic but aggressive vocals make it a winner in my book. Far better than anything Testament ever did and better than the debut by a pretty fair stretch. (the debut is good, just too inconsistent to be amazing)

  • You´re right. I love Forbidden. They play a more progressive style but still fuckin agressive. I really like progressive Thrash Bands. My Favourites: Xentrix, Toxik, Deathrow, Forbidden.

Crossover: Nuclear Assault, M.O.D., S.O.D., D.R.I., Wehrmacht, The Accüsed, Excel....

Agreed on the thrash revival point. Although, whats with hating Testament? Seems like its a popular thing to dislike these days...

All thrash metal should be violent. Testament with a few exceptions ( Gathering and Demonic included ) is everithing but violent. The same for Forbidden ( excepting Forbidden Evil - great fuckin album!! ) and many others.
As for the latest thrash metal revival, i enjoy it a lot. Those who didn't suffered the 90's lack of it can never understand.

Uhh, what? Twisted Into Form is pretty damn aggressive as far as the Bay Area thrash scene goes. It's way more so than anything Testament or hell, Exodus after Bonded By Blood ever did.

  • I consider it a little bit fancy but still I enjoy almost half of it. Indeed, a touch of aggressiveness is detectable, but the tech/progg approach almost annihilate it. However thought aggressive doesn't mean violent. A bichon maltese can be aggressive when get nervous, but never violent. Is about thinking and doing. On the other hand, a rottweiler... :))

    l.e.: pfew! damn traffic!
So, mate, when I said violent I was thinking about Slayer and Dark Angel and of course I don't agree with Forbidden being more aggressive or violent than after BBB Exodus. At least, if other elements doesn't matter to you, Exodus never had clean voice passages in the mentioned period.

  • I must say I've never had any urge to give either Testament or Forbidden a listen.

Edit: posted recommendation stuff in the wrong thread.

  • Testaments the legacy is their only album worth listening to imo
    some of my favorite albums
Kreator 1985 - 1990 I think its about 5 albums in there that all just kick ass.
    Darkness Descends
    Persecution Mania

  • Premier League:

    Slayer: 83 - 90
    Kreator: 85 - 90
    Sodom: overall

Thrashing mad, we feed the beast
in leather armour we ride the priest!
church is on fire, we're having fun
spikes are shining, we ride the nun!
  • I'd put Sepultura's 80s output in the premier league as well.

  • Sure, but my Gigantic 3 defined the most important direction lines in what we call now thrash/death/black unholy trinity. With all the freshness and inspiration, Sepultura's pre BtR era is Slayer worship.

Thrashing mad, we feed the beast

church is on fire, we're having fun

  • Maybe, but Schizophrenia is the best Slayer worship I've ever heard.
