  The "Netherlands" you speak of (to prevent confusion usually called Low Countries) covered all of Belgium, Luxembourg and parts of France and Germany. Nation-building has taken place since and borders have shifted, there's no point in complaining about what eventually ended still being the "Netherlands" as a state. The point is that the country's name actually is Netherlands, not Holland. I'm sorry, but you don't get to secede and then complain about the country's name.

  If we are going to be precise, historically the term Netherlands is also not really correct either, since it includes all the "Lage Landen", including Flanders. This name is used in plural also in other languages: NetherlandS, PayS-bas. Flemish people will say that they speak "Nederlands" but object to speaking "Hollands". Technically the Dutch thus live in a country with one name which is too big and one which is too small.

  Heh. I'll soon spend a semester in the Netherlands in Nordbrabaant and am already teaching myself always to say Netherlands and NOT Holland. Being from Germany, the latter is far more common but to avoid any hostilities I better get used to the correct name.

  @ Jazai: You should read better. That page you're linking to clearly states that Amsterdam is the capital. In fact, it even states that 3 separate times and you still think that you're proving an opposite point by linking to that?

  Another example: "Macedonia" and "Macedonians" who are really Slavs, and their country is only the northern part of the province of Macedonia, that belong to Greece.

  Frisians make such a big deal of it.. I disagree with "Holland" though.. But Frisian folk would even annihilate him if he used "Netherlands"...
