Well, I have 598s. I am not dissatisfied with the bass with it since I'm not a bass head. I don't listen to much dubstep or hip hop so bass is not my priority. Good EQs and sounstages are, since I like folk and jazz and classical and prog rock/metal. they're great if you're into these kinds of genres, ambient as well, and hip hop and what not are still really good but they're more about exposing subtleties than overwhelmingly incessant bass. Good for vocals and sounds at its best with a little amplification and with lossless music that has good DR.

I would rather ask a question here than at headfi..... Any headphones at a lower cost that sound like the HD598's. For the short time i tested them out straight out of an ipod touch they sounded great. I consider myself a bass head and did not notice any lack of bass as many others point out. I feel like they sounded way more fun than my dt 770 80 ohm's.

No one is saying it's impossible to enjoy music in lo-fi. Some people are just picky.

i always feel like an outsider. More of a music fan than audiophile. If all i had was ipod earbuds with one side sounding crackly i would still enjoy my music.

I agree. When musicians put effort into songwriting and production, that is when, in my opinion, the effort the audience puts into recreating high fidelity is made worth it.

Very nicely put JBThazard! I just playing devils advocate (see ';)' in my post) and trying to get a bit of a discussion going on here :] Taste and dedication to audio quality obviously don't have to be coherent. One thing I do honestly think is that listening to classical, jazz or post-rock/ambient such as GY!BE is much more rewarding then just a random pop tune from the radio. I mean, had no trouble at all hearing the differences between my FLAC F# A# infinity and my vbr lame mp3.....but I wouldn't want to ever have to bet on a FLAC/v0 abx test of Justin Bieber's Baby ;D hahaha

"the head-fi community obviously contains people who like to go through every detail of sound, I thought that attitude would be reflected in their taste in music." There are probably hundreds or thousands of Head-Fi'ers who complain about the differences between lossy and lossless fidelity, simply because their music lacks the adequate production/mixing/mastering quality or intricacies or low-mixing subtleties that, from my experience, makes the upgrade to lossless audio worth it. Audiophiles are rare. Audiophiles who can make correlative conclusions and not make random, generalized assumptions they think will apply to everything, are immoderately rare.

Modern jazz and neo-classical is often brickwalled. Obviously not as much as metal/modern electronica/hip hop, but it happens. As for the argument, I mean "argument", that only sophisticated and sagacious people listen to classical and jazz, this is a stereotypical cliche that exists only because they're comparatively "difficult" genres to get into. In my opinion, no other genre is as emphatic about notation as those two. Particular sub genres of Rock and Metal can also have complexity, but stigmas on the subcultures have prevented them from being in such a "high regard" as Classical or Jazz.

It's a generalisation. Making the judgement that classical or jazz listeners are less superficial than pop music listeners might be true on a generalised level. Also, is there some kind of proof based on logical thinking that leads you to the conclusion that superficial people mostly listen to pop, and less superficial people listen primarily to jazz and classical music?

Exactly what accoun posted. Most pop music just misses the subtlety and depth in sound to make it worthwhile to listen to on a hi-fi set-up imho. Not saying that mainstream music can't be enjoyable! It's just pleasing on a more superficial level and since the head-fi community obviously contains people who like to go through every detail of sound, I thought that attitude would be reflected in their taste in music.

But you can expect that Jazz and Classical music is well-produced/good sounding. At least more than in other genres...

v Music taste is subjective anyway.

  • JBThazard

Why? Being an audiophile doesn't mean your taste in music will be better than average, just your taste in audio equipment. /pretentious rant

Hmmm.....I somehow expected some more obscure stuff on the charts of an audiophile forum. No classical or jazz artists either. Head-fi I am disappointed! ;)
