Hans Zimmer is a popular, or generally uninspired, composer of film and...well that is all he does, no stage or opera. Anyway he is a one trick pony who's scores all sound...

OK so maybe he isn't the worst; if I could change the name of the group it would be "Hans Zimmer is the most overrated...".
There are worse, such as Tyler Bates who ripped off Elliot Goldenthal's Titus score for his 300 "score" and also happens to sound like another "Zimmer clone", but that's the point all these newer, younger composers who only want to make the bucks instead of create genuinely awesome music all try to copy his hackneyed sound, that generic big sound of his that is found in every big-budget, disaster he scores. He is ridiculously, criminally overrated, young kids who think that because they might buy say the Gladiator soundtrack that makes them tastefull...no kids! Listen to Elliot Goldenthal or Jerry Goldsmith instead, two composers equally talented and original who deserve far more listeners but Hans Zimmer is always there scoring all of Hollywood's most popular trash flicks and thus getting more and more undeserved attention.

Hans Zimmer is like the Britney Spears of film composers, he shares Britneys lack of diversity and originality aswell.

The group image is from the Pearl Harbour score...now if that isn't indicative of his style I do not know what is.
Now here is the part where I am going to be fair. He is not absolutely terrible, most of his scores have a few decent cues here and there and Gladiator, for example, is mostly 'good' or '3 out of 5 stars'. The problem with him though is that you will quickly notice that ALL of his scores are so similair it becomes obnoxiously samey, that's what I meant by "one trick pony" in the group overview.

The "Connected Artists" of this group are people he has done scores with, composers he has 'executive produced' or composers in his company (of minions) "Remote Control Productions"...if a clue as to the nature of the music these people create isn't right there in the title I don't know what is.

As far as I am concerned his best works are:
- Broken Arrow (1996) (Actually pretty awesome, yet random)
- Gladiator (2000)
- The recent Batman movies with Newton-Howard.

Is he too popular? Yes. Is he taking some jobs he shouldn't? Yes. But he has some amazing scores. Gladiator, Lion King, Last Samurai, Batman, Inception, (main theme) The Holiday, Modern Warfare 2, .... . So he earned the respect.

"the thing is he knows how to make the simple sound super epic. that is indeed a skill. the best pop songs in the world are usually simple to play." Thank you! On top of that, he does exactly what he is hired to do; He uses his music to draw in the emotional side of the viewers to enhance the experience. We can all agree that his music turns a great movie into a greater movie. I will say his music may be over-the-top sometimes.. But when you're watching an over-the-top film, isn't that expected? Imagine Danny Elfman or James Horner doing PotC... They just don't mix well. Zimmer is the essence of contemporary epic movie scores and has received his due credit. No overrating imo.

I'd make a variation on this group, called "Hans Zimmer is overused". Just looking at his discography, wow: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Zimmer_discography. I actually really like some of his scores, but it seems like he's being overworked. Quantity before quality, I guess. What made me think that, was when I watched Gladiator AFTER seeing PotC, and spent most of the movie expecting Jack Sparrow to show up. Sigh.

Its like clothing or food. Everyone has their own preferences, I really don't see why you people have a compulsive need to run around making your hatred apparent. Long as he is not plagiarizing, I don't really think any artist deserves to be bashed on for just being popular.

I don't really understand why people get so angry about Hans Zimmer being "overrated". In my opinion he is a great composer. The Lion King is a fantastic soundtrack, very different to his more prominent works. Inception, for me, was innovative and inspiring. And as I always point out, THE HOLIDAY. Maybe he has done many many similar scores that I have not heard. But he has done some awesome work that is among my favourite soundtracks. I know I'm no expert, but I still know what I like, and I like Hans Zimmer.

By the way, I just compared Elliot Goldenthal's' Victorious Titus to Tyler Bates' Returns a King and is simply disgusting how blatantly Bates has ripped off Goldenthal. Very sad.

I am both surprised and saddened to hear nothing of the late, great Bernard Herrmann. Psycho, The Day The Earth Stood Still, Vertigo, Taxi Driver, and I believe even the Twilight Zone theme are his doing. Compare Zimmer to a genius like Herrmann and you will see just how boring and monotonous Zimmer's "music" really is. It is truly mindnumbingly BORING! His best work was probably his contribution to The Pirates of The Caribbean soundtrack. Though that soundtrack is by no means groundbreaking by any stretch of the imagination. Compared to geniuses like Herrmann, Zimmer truly is overrated.

+1 for the soundtrack of The Thin Red Line. I prefer Joe Hisaishi as a composer though (for the overall work)
