  Most people won't even hear the difference between a ~160kbps MP3 / AAC and the losless file. BUT flac is great for doing backups of your CDs (Accurate Rip, CTDB) + you can transcode to any other lossy or losless format in the future without having to re-rip your collection. Who cares about space these days? 2TB drives are about 70-80 Euros.

  I've yet to see someone provide a screen cap of a blind ABX test with Foobar proving that they successfully heard the difference between MP3 320kbps and FLAC without guessing. Flac is really only good for archiving purposes, complete waste of space for listening to however.

  To convert FLAC ->mp3 use Razorlame together with a LAME mp3 encoder. I can give you further details if you need help.

  Hay I don't know a thing about kbps or how to convert files. I like Itunes and find it works pretty good for me and I'd like to play FLAC files I've downloaded accidentally instead of MP3. If someone could shout me how to do that'd be a big help. Cheers

  FLAC + good sound card + good speakers = win. Otherwise, sometimes it's hard to feel the difference between FLAC and MP3.

  Yeah, but again it depends on your rig. FLAC can sound great with the right headphones (among other things) but if you use shitty Dr Dre's or Apple buds, FLAC will sound like 320kbps, probably.

  Vinyl by itself is hardly a guarantee for good music. However, it might be, that better mixed or mastered music is often released on Vinyl. Many people, however, cannot afford a separate Vinyl record player, or do not want to afford such. Music on CDs is, that's true, more often mixed or mastered more radio-friendly. However, that does not mean that music on CD is always shitty. People also like the more compact size of the CD. In the end, music on CD is not usually bad, unless the music itself is bad, also music on Vinyl might sound better sometimes, due to the higher frequencies on Vinyl when converted to digital, and better mixing and mastering. Converted to 64 kbps, no music sounds good, however, contrary to below poster's assertion.
