Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC) is a file format for lossless audio data compression, primarily authored by Josh Coalson. FLAC reduces bandwidth and storage requirements without sacrificing the integrity of the audio source. A digital audio recording (such as a CD track) encoded to FLAC can be decompressed into an identical copy of the audio data. Audio sources encoded to FLAC are typically reduced to 50–60% of their original size. During compression, FLAC does not lose quality from the audio stream, a notable characteristic of lossy compression formats such as MP3, AAC, and Vorbis. FLAC is suitable for everyday audio playback and archival, with support for tagging, cover art and fast seeking. FLAC's free and open source royalty-free nature makes it well-supported by many software applications. FLAC playback support in portable audio devices and dedicated audio systems is limited at this time compared to lossy formats like MP3, but FLAC is supported out of the box by more hardware devices than competing lossless formats like WavPack.

Not to hurts anyones feelings, but there is a larger FLAC users group on last.fm, Free Lossless Audio Codec. If you want to make a statement, you should probably join that one ;)

Would anyone possess / be able to send the song "The Endless Knot" by Eluveitie from their debut album "Spirit" to me as a flac? I'd be eternally grateful if so. I have tried ripping the song from my CD numerous times, but even though the CD is without stains and scratches, there's always a scrambling noise towards the end of the song. It's quite annoying. Please contact me via a personal message if you have the said song as a flac and would be willing to send it over to me.

    .flac 900~980kbps | .mp3 320kbps | it's perceptible! so, flac > mp3

You may not hear the difference between flac and mp3 encoded at 320, but you might hear the difference between a file converted from a flac source and a compressed source. I love the function in media monkey that allows me to on the fly convert AAC to my ipod and mp3 to my Sansa (in what ever bit rate) while maintaining one library all encoded in flac. Also allows for easy conversion to what ever the new format is in the future with out ripping them all over again.

@BlockJuice: I also love it when the bitrate jumps over 1k. Doesn't happen too often, but it's fun to see.

FLACs are really fucking incredible, but truth is, the human ear can't discern any difference between this and a 320kbps MP3. My heart races when I see an 1100+ bitrate though. Don't tell anyone.

MP3 is more compatible. All portable players supports MP3 files, FLAC not necessarily.
