    in EU you also have VAT, gas tax, road tax and "green tax" hidden in the prices, so how can anything be cheap in EU? it can't. EU is far more enslaving than communist Poland of the 70s or 80s, for that matter.

    So communist countries (no taxes, becouse the government decided how much to pay you) must have been really liberal. Regulations cripple much more than taxes, it's just not so obvious. Example: the cheap-as-hell (indian) TATA motors car (becouse of the need to adjust to EU regulations) would cost four times more in EU than in India. And it's like that with everything.

    "Slavery is still slavery, regardless of how much a slave can keep." I just said that, if they rob you less that doesn't make you any more free, you contradict yourself.

    so a highly-taxed but little regulated economy is "liberal", right? just GIMME A BREAK. Slavery is still slavery, regardless of how much a slave can keep. Regardless if it's 10% of his income (like in Roman republic), or 15% (like in modern Sweden or Poland)

    Low taxes do not make a country liberal, lack of interventionism does

    Well low taxes are not everything. Belarus seems to be very corrupt and they have a high inflation.

    Belarus has the lowest taxes and the least regulations in economy. That's why it is the freest country in Europe now ;)

    Belarus is indeed on the last place in Europe. What should make them more liberal then Ireland, Denmark or Switzerland?

    Since the first day of 2009, Byeloruss is the most free country in Europe (economically speaking of course). I wonder if it will be recorde by IoEF or will they rather dump Byeloruss on some low place because Lukashenko is a satrap :LOL;

    Bahrain is on #16. So much for the prejudices. I would say you should take a closer look on this survey and its outcomes.

    Is IoEF reliable enough to even consider it? is it not partial to Israel, and prejudiced toward Arabic countries per se? I don't know what criteria were used to judge UAE less free than Israel, but on a sane mind, would a fascist country with coercive draft be more liberal than a business Mecca?

    hm update: Index of Economic Freedom 2009 says Israel #42 and UAE #54. Without the minimal Taxation the rank of the UAE would be even worse.
