This is important.

Wikipedia has 1st Wave, 2nd Wave and Mainstream. Fourfa breaks it up into Emocore, Emo, Hardcore Emo, Post-Emo Indie Rock, and Post-Emo Other. Let's not forget Powerviolence, Emoviolence, Emotional Rock, Post-Hardcore, Fake Emo, Posercore, Screamo, Skramz, and all other related things or places where there's overlap.

Were Rites of Spring sellouts who brought Emotional Hardcore into the mainstream when they signed with a major label? Did Sunny Day Real Estate's raw screams and visceral octave chords tear their way through Spock Rock to create a new sound called Screamo? Is Hawthorne Heights Post-Hardcore, or just a punk band? These are important issues and we need to get butthurt making up our own bullshit terms to pidgeonhole bands into while mocking people who don't use our terminology.

Discuss.

Honestly, I feel like this all this sub-sub-genre-ing marks the death of a potential revolution, well, that and all the co-opting by mainstream shitheads. It's not even that Hawthorne Heights is trying to be hardcore, but their music is just shit...god, the lyrics are like highschool freshman breakup poetry and their video references (or rips-off, do they know the difference?) a John Cusak movie. The most noticeable distinction between what is 'fake' and 'real' is the use of melody, when it's real the "hardness" of the music is right there in your face and the melody is kind of an undercurrent, it evolves and emerges through harsh sounds but never overtakes it. In mainstream "hardcore", the melody defines the song and any hard/dischordant-ness (screaming especially) is safely placed in the background.

I have to disagree, Melt-Banana's influence has been much more pronounced in the post-rock scene what with bands like You and I, Portraits of Past, and Sunny Day Real Estate citing them as influences
