God-awful covers

  • God-awful covers

Yesterday while I was at work, I heard the most god-awful cover of Radiohead's 'High and Dry' come on. I sat in awe for the enitre 4 minutes of blasphemy and it stayed in my head all day. Finally, I looked it up this morning and I am now proud to attribute this horrible rendition to Jamie Cullum. Thanks, Jamie, for thouroughly f-ing up a great song and turning it into pop crap!

Anyway, I thought it'd be interesting to open a forum to horrible covers and renditions of great songs. Heard your favorite band in Musak recently? Let's hear it!

If you're having trouble finding out who's covering a song, I found The Covers Project to be extremely helpful. And I found some good covers in the process!

    Favourite covers...

I like Nine Inch Nails' cover of Gary Numan's "Metal" and Squarepusher's cover of the Joy Division classic, "Love Will Tear Us Apart" is just fantastic. I also think Marilyn Manson's cover of "Tainted Love" is brilliant.

  • I'm actually quite fond of Marilyn Manson's cover of 'Personal Jesus' by Depeche Mode.

    best covers:
the dismemberment plan's cover of the cure's "close to me"
foo fighters cover of gary numan's "down in the park"

both far better than the original IMO.

    worst covers:
    anything avril covered
any top40/oldies hit covered by pop-punk bands

Best cover ever is of course Jimi Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower"

Worst cover is a tie between Marilyn Manson's rendition of "Sweet Dreams" and William Shatner's take on "Common People"

  • ^ Funny, I like all three of those. :)

Speaking of bad covers, i was in borders the other day and some talentless prick was covering some genius jeff buckley songs, i left immediately. i'm glad i dont know who it was, but it sounded like a band that'd open for maroon 5.

    WORST!

Britney Spears doing 'I Love Rock 'n' Roll'

    yuck!

  • Has anyone heard The Light 3000 by Schneider tm? Wonderful glitchy cover of a Smiths song.

And on the subject of William Shatner, the man is a genius!

Blazing Squad's (for those who are fortunate not to know of them, they're a horrible wannabe, poppy "rap" group) cover of Crossroads by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony is truly shameful.

Worst: Jessica Simpson's version of Angels. I don't like the original and she slaughtered it.

Best: Embrace's cover of How Come by D12. Silk purse from a sow's ear.

  • I;d have to say the best cover has to be Johnny Cash doing "Hurt" second to that Pixies covering "Lady in the Radiator Song" originally done by Peter Ivers

    Gothic tribute to David Bowie

All this CD is terrible, the songs of Bowie sound pathetic. Its even a bad gothic CD

  • Some of best

Tori Amos' version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" - striking, beautiful.
Brad Mehldau's versons of Radionhead's "Everything in it's Right Place", "Paranoid Android", "Exit Music" - for a jazz musician of his reputation to give such (well-deserved) accolades to a rock band is unusual enough, but he put his money and his talent where his mouth is - and did very good versions to boot.

    Good covers/ Bad covers

    Good Covers:
when pavement covers a song it's either pretty funny (eg wonderwall) or just damn good (the pixies' 'gigantic'). Iron & wines' cover of the postal service's 'Such great heights' is a great interpretation... Oh and flaming lips crossing 7 nation army and going to florida is just flaming lips genius...

    Bad Covers:
I love it and hate it, Devo doing 'head like a hole' its funny, but yeah.... and although i like cat power, i just don't like her version of pavement's 'we dance'...

  • Speaking of Jamie Cullum, I think his cover of Jimi Hendrix "Wind Cries Mary" is possibly one of the biggest blasphemies ever..

  • The most recent awful cover was Cold's interpretation of Bowie's "Space Oddity", it's just... it's just so... bleh.

    I like turtles.
  • When I heard Jessica Simpson's (or whoever it was) cover of These Boots Are Made For Walking, I wanted to hurl something. I also don't like that Allan guy's cover of Best I Ever Had by Vertical Horizon or Britney Spears doing I Love Rock and Roll. I can't think of a single country or jazz cover I liked. Neither of them do it for me. On a related note, the sampling in pop/hip hop/r&b songs drives me to tears. Write something original and GOOD!

I did like Letters to Cleo's cover of I Want You To Want Me, Puff Daddy's I'll Be Missing You (can't think of why, but I like it), Alkistis Protopsalti's cover of Nickelback's How You Remind Me, Rachid Taha's Rock el Casbah, and I thought Somegirl did a nice version of I Only Have Eyes For You.

Quite Frankly I think anything Shatner does musically is gold.

I loved Franz Ferdinand's cover of Mis-Shapes, No Doubt's cover of it's My Life, Save Ferris' Version of Come on Eileen and Ozma's cover of the Tetris theme. Placebo do great covers as well.

Worst cover: TaTu's How Soon is Now. If I were Morrissey, I'd have dug myself a grave to turn in.

  • I thought t.A.T.u. did rather well, but then I do have a thing for Russian girls.

  • In my opinion nothing can beat Limp Bizkit's version of The Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony". It's a rape of this song. There should be a law against it. And against Fred Durst, too.

The German "Popstars"-Girlband Preluders once covered R.E.M.'s "Losing my religion". Horrible.

A very great and inventive cover I know is M. Ward's version of David Bowie's "Let's Dance". And a classic of course is "Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley, originally written by Leonard Cohen.

    Far Corporation

In my opinion the worst cover version has to be Far Corporations version of Stairway to Heaven. I think it should have been renamed "It makes me wonder" as that is all the seem to sing throughout their version.
