  • off the top of my.... head

since eberhard weber, oregon, meredith monk, pat metheny, paul bley, john surman, keith jarrett, jan garbarek, gary peacock, come so easily to mind, i really should give it a shot, and pick the following twenty gems

    later that evening eberhard weber
    little movements eberhard weber
    crossing oregon
    oregon oregon
    bass desires marc johnson
    off ramp pat metheny group
    wayfarer jan garbarek group
    ballads paul bley
    somewhere called home norma winstone
    azimuth '85 azimuth
voices from the past gary peacock
    dolmen music meredith monk
old friends new friends ralph towner
    solo concert ralph towner
    angel song lee konitz
    double double you kenny wheeler
amazing adventures of simon simon john surman
    live carla bley
    social studies carla bley
john abercrombie quartet john abercrombie quartet

  • honorable mention:

    tales of another gary peacock

and the reason i add this is also because it has been utterly ignored, even though it signifies the first recorded collaboration between peacock and keith jarrett, who much later with dejohnette formed the longstanding stalwart of the keith jarrett trio, which plays to this day...

another reason is to add of course to this honorable mention, you guessed it, practically the whole ecm keith jarrett catalog, making sure to mention the sun bear concerts and the whole rest of the ecm pat metheny catalog, making sure to mention rejoicing, as falls wichita etc., first circle, and of course 80/81....

  • and finally i must also mention...

good old terje rypdal and his ecm catalog, mentioning waves, blue, and did i forget art lande, huh? obviously, one should just get the whole fricking catalog and only then rest truly content.... go figure!

  • important, unfacetious correction

yeah, i did mess up one thing, and that is voice from the past: paradigm gary peacock, and not voices etc., sorry :(

    Peter Erskine: As it is

Though it is credited to Erskine, the piano of John Taylor is the magic element of this album.

    Keith Jarret Trio: Changeless
    Sidsel Endresen: Exile

Tomorrow it will be some other albums, and this is the great thing about the ECM catalogue :-)

uu and i forgot 'bout Eberhard Weber - Later That Evening

i also adore Ketil Bjoernstad's music but his best recordings were outside ECM: Rainbow Sessions, Floating.

  • Impossible

At this point everything's already been mentioned, but I'd like to just put another vote in for Tales Of Another which is an often overlooked piece of musical history... not to mention it's just a ridiculous record.

Otherwise, Survivors' Suite or Jimmy Giuffre's 1961 (originally released by Atlantic as 2 separate albums) are brilliant.

Now I'm going to stop myself.

  • Yes Litania is a very nice album...

  • Some top ECM albums

Surely it's too hard to pick just one album.
    Here's some of my favourites:
Ralph Towner: Diary (The album that broke my prejudice against jazz - i hated jazz until 1979), Solstice, Solo Concert, and more
Jan Garbarek: Twelve Moons, I Took Up The Runes, Visible World, Dis, Officium
Pat Metheny: First Circle, As falls Wichita, New Chautauqua
Arvo Pärt: Tabula Rasa, Alina (Fantastic minimalism)
    Egberto Gismonti: Solo
    Chick Corea/Gary Burton: Chrystal Silence
Many others deserved to be mentioned, like Eberhard Weber, but I can't yet pick a certain album.
Oregon is one of my favourite groups, but their best albums are not on ECM.
I also have to say that many of Pat Metheny's best albums are on other labels, but the ECM-albums are also great.
Gallery is an interesting one-album constellation that I like a lot; with Paul McCandless, David Darling, Michael diPasca, Dave Samuels and Ratzo Harris

  • One album??? Impossible.
