We're going to start 2010 with a bang here at solipsistic NATION! Today's show features a live set from John and Paul Healy of Somatic Responses.

I confess I hadn't heard anything by Somatic Responses until Nicolas Chevreux of Ad Noiseam kindly sent me a copy of their Reformation album my way (listen to my interview with Nicolas here). I instantly became a fan and played them on the show back in October. I know I'll play even more tracks from Reformation in the near future but on today's show we'll talk with John and Paul Healy about their botched Detroit show and subsequently rocking a set through a television in a Doubletree hotel. If that sounds funny to you then you'll find my interview with John and Paul hilarious! I had to constantly back away from my microphone during the interview because they had me laughing so much.

Looking back on 2009 I'm really impressed with the quality of live shows that have appeared on solipsistic NATION. Recent shows have featured King Cannibal, Eskmo and KiloWatts. In fact three of the most downloaded shows of 2009 have featured live sets from Amon Tobin, Lokua and Exillon. I'll continue to deliver great recordings of live shows in 2010 in the next couple of months with Hecq, Mad EP, Terminal 11 and Ill.Gates!

I absolutely hate rating music. I hate dating it too, but rating… That’s just wrong. I mean, how can you compare the minimalist beauty of Taylor Deupree to the pounding beats of Chris Clark? What’s the scale here? Last year, in Headphone Commute’s Best of 2008, I attempted to tier my favorites into “Absolute Must“, “The Very Best“, and “The Essentials“, and even that, of course, is rating music. This year, I wanted to select my favorite releases from each category – but then I was faced with another dilemma – lumping music into genres is probably even worse than rating it! All this negativity has been clouding over me until in a bout of frustration I came out with the answer!

And so, I present you with 15 lists of 10 favorite releases unified by a unique theme in alphabetical order by artist. That’s 150 albums of the year! You will see that these entries tend to fall within similar styles anyway, but I will avoid pronouncing those out loud. Can you guess the genre behind “Music For Vibrating Your Neighbors’ Dusty China“? The selections are limited to only full length albums. See the bottom of this page for links to EPs, Singles and Mini Albums, as well as Mixes and Compilations of 2009.

Think of these as “playlists” of my favorite albums of the year. Choose your mood, the weather, or the time of day, and you shall find my recommendations for the year. There is probably enough music in here to get you through yet another year! I will reveal the winners of each list with one post at a time, one per day. And yes… They are all winners. They truly are…

Top Albums Of 2009

I’m not exactly sure why but I love end of year reviews. It’s a great way to find new music and a chance to reassess albums you might have passed over. So if you have time please, tell me what I’ve missed out on, list your top albums of the year or maybe send me a link to any interesting end of year reviews!

2009 was the year all of my genre specific play lists got shot to pieces. Artists seemed to defy classification and frankly that made the last twelve months a whole lot more interesting.
