DJ Magazine is a fortnightly magazine dedicated to Electronic Dance Music (EDM) and DJs, established in 1991. DJMag.com didn't exist, so all votes were sent in by mail. 700 people voted in top 100 djs poll in 1997, having Carl Cox as one of the first No.1 DJ's. The magazine is translated monthly to Portuguese, Polish, Ukrainian, Lithuanian and Chinese.
DJmag.com is the online edition of DJ Magazine, and was launched in 1998. A worldwide Electronic and Dance music magazine covering the latest news on dance & electronic music. It carries daily dance music news and features with DJs, and has a digital download music store selling dance tracks. Home of a poll called DJmag's Top 100 DJs, fans get to vote for their favourite DJs through the website. DJMag.com received votes as it was released, allowing more people to vote worldwide. The amount of votes more than trebbled, and Paul Oakenfold was crowned people's champion for the first time.
It was 1999 when here were 31 new entries with four women and Paul Oakenfold's second year as number one.
In 2000 DJ legend Tiësto came for first time in No.24. DJMag awarded Sasha as the No.1 DJ.
2001, 60% of the votes of 50 countries went to the top 25 when 500 DJ's were nominated. John Digweed was crowned No.1.
Before 2002, Paul Oakenfold and Carl Cox had both won the award twice, but Tiësto got them from their throne. 38,481 votes came in from 65 countries.
In 2003 djmag counted with 61,529 votes, twice as 2002. 120 countries voted this year, Tiësto took the crown this year doubtlessly.
It is 2004, and DJ Tiësto was crowned No.1 for the third year in a row. The magazine also began an annual VJ and Club poll published alongside the DJ poll.
Year 2005, finally Paul van Dyk reached number one.
In 2006, Paul van Dyk was crowned No.1 DJ in the world for the second consecutive year. DJMag counted with the participation of 217,102 fans, 90,000 more than last year; in which 229 different countries participated out of the 243 recognized countries. Most votes came from the United States, closely followed by the UK, and then Germany. In October 2006 Future Publishing, the publishers of DJ Magazine, confirmed it is to sell or close a number of titles in its print portfolio, including DJ. In November 2006 MiM completed the purchase of DJMag from Future Publishing.
In January 2008, the magazine created the "DJ Blackbook" which is a database of DJ's, producers and promoter. It was released online and in a printed version with over 10,000 contacts. Trackitdown.net formed a collaboration with this year's DJ poll, saying "By offering each voter a free track to download from our catalogue of 350,000 titles from over 10,000 labels, we can demonstrate how easy it is to find your favourite electronic music legally."
