Back in the old days, sonny...
Before there were MP3s, before there were CDs, before there were audiocassettes, before there were long-playing records, before there were 45 RPM singles, before there were 10-inch 78 RPM albums, before there was any of that, there were cylinders. They work on the same principle as vinyl records except for spinning flat, they spin around (see the picture in the group avatar).

Cylinders, which are fragile and easily damaged, are now collector's items. Many of them have made their way into libraries over the years, however, and the University of California Santa Barbara has put together an electronic archive of these recordings, many of which date back to the first decades of the 20th century.

I urge you to go over to the UCSB website, which is very easy to navigate, and listen to some of the wonderful music they have digitized and put up for access via World Wide Web. It's history, yes, but the sounds are so fresh and exciting and rewarding you won't feel as if it is from your great-great-grandmother's time.
