which camel album should I buy first?

That's difficult. I began with Miracle but I would give you the advice to start with Moonmadness. :)

well I have heard that mirage is their best album, but allmusic doesn't seem to agree with that. So maybe I will trust you for Moonmadness...

hello i am a french fan to the camel group

I'm french and i like camel.
my collection is 13 albums of this group.
I have de preference for the latest albums.

-Rajaz
-A nod and the wink
-The harbour of tears (génial)

I like the precision and diversity of the Camel music.
If i can explain where i like it: this music remember for my the oldest album of Genesis and the other group diseappear now.

just got into Camel, bought me Mirage a couple of days ago, and I like it a lot...

any suggestions to the next album I should get? I see some of you recommend Moonmadness, but that's as a starter album, how's the sound of Moonmadness contra Mirage?

You obviously mean Mirage.

My first Camel Album was Mirage and I suggest you start with Mirage.
Well this is what nearly everybody suggested here so I guess you also started with Mirage.

I bought their debut first and i must admit i injoyed it.
I haven't heard mirage yet. My second was moonmadness, i don't really like that one yet, but haven't heard it that much yet. My third was snoowgoos. Now this one is great! That it doesn't have vocals, is maybe sad, cause i liked the vocals on Camel (first album).

The start of the first album is really annoying! When you heard it a couple of times you don't want to listen to it because the start is so cliché. After a few seconds/minutes it does really own!

When listening to snowgoose i don't see any imaginary creature running i nthe snow, it kinda reminds me of pink floyd when hearing the guitar (after about 10 minutes in particular!). The sound is awesome, the structure is clear... topnotch! Won't bore you.

well mirage, snow goose and moonmadness are clearly in another league. But after that there are some great underrated albums as well. personally I like Breathless, Camel, and nude. dust and dreams is good as well

My first exposure to Camel was through an anthology. That said, it was a good collection but not the best starting point for Camel. I'd say Mirage is your best bet, then the first album, The Snow Goose, and Moonmadness. Of the 80s albums, Nude is the best, as best I can tell.

I think you should try to listen Stationary Traveller ... you won't regret it ;) or Harbour of Tears is one of their best album although released not so long ago.
