Peaceful Public Protest In Support Of Jazz At The MOBO Awards

  • Peaceful Public Protest In Support Of Jazz At The MOBO Awards

A call to action to all supporters of Jazz music to join in a peaceful demonstration in front of the world's broadcast media to protest the removal of the Jazz category in this year's MOBO (Music Of Black Origin) Awards.

According to MOBO's Mission Statement, the organisation "identifies, showcases and celebrates music derived from black heritage". The removal of the jazz category undermines the original spirit of the MOBO awards, and ignores the place of jazz in the heritage of Black music and its influence on all other forms of popular music. It also ignores the incredible wealth and diversity of the jazz talent in the UK, and the vitality of the jazz scene. Despite several complaints from the jazz community, MOBO has failed to reinstate the award.

Trumpeter/vocalist Abram Wilson, in association with Jazz Services, has obtained permission from The Metropolitan Police to stage a peaceful protest at the MOBO Awards ceremony tomorrow evening (Wednesday) at the main entrance to the Royal Albert Hall. Abram will lead a brass band providing a musical backdrop for the jazz community to voice their outrage at MOBO's decision.

Join this 45-minute public demonstration on:

    Wednesday 20th September

    6pm - 6.45pm (Meet at 5.45pm)

Royal Albert Hall - main entrance
    Kensington Gore
    London SW7

to insist that MOBO reinstate the award for Best Jazz Act.

This is your opportunity to give jazz music the recognition it deserves!
