BOYCOTT Crystal Castles
It's recently come to light that Crystal Castles, a Toronto-based band, has been heavily sampling music from several chip music artists without obtaining permission or crediting them. Lo-bat's tracks Bibibi and Tizzy, from his 8bitpeoples release Game Boy, are just two instances of this.
8bitpeoples release all their music under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND License. What this means is that you're free to share it however you like, with whomever you like. They ask in return is that you credit it appropriately, do not use it for any commercial purposes, and obtain permission before creating any derivative works (such as remixing it or using it as the soundtrack for a video). Crystal Castles has violated every term of this license in their use of Lo-Bat's music. Furthermore, they have committed copyright infringement by sampling other artists such as Covox, whose drums from his song Sunday appear in no less than four Crystal Castles songs.

We are not against Crystal Castles' music, we simply want them to acknowldge the people who they have taken their music from. They are cashing in on free music and the 8-bit community is suffering. If you like Crystal Castles music, got to http://www.8bitcollective.com and there is lots of music like Crystal Castles to download legally and for free.

You need to realise that not all artists are after recognition and money! Crazy I know!!! Is it possible that some artists are motivated by creative ideas and concepts rather than possible success?? Also, I'm not arguing that Crystal Castles sampling/plagiarizing material is legal, I'm just saying that I think it should be.

Also the analogy is weak. slickerchick definitely needs to meet the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act (1988) (UK only) which, as we all know, applies to any artwork. So in fact, instead of being 'applauded by the original artist' you would more likely be prosecuted. Have a nice day.

I will always support all sampling in all music regardless of any factor (including tastefulness and legality). Sampling is simply a more tangible manifestation of one of the most important foundations of music (and any art) - appropriation. In the world of visual art, if I took a picture by another artist then recoloured it and drew features over the top of it I would be applauded by the original artist, not prosecuted. If I went on to sell that painting for twenty thousand dollars and the original artist then took me to court asking for a slice of the profits I made with my work, the judge would laugh and have the case dismissed immediately. If artists in music continue to stick to these ridiculous copyright laws and continue to whip up fuss about another artist appropriating one of their tunes then the legal precedent will be established to allow my hypothetical situation to happen. I will not be surprised if in 5 years I find guitar brands, guitar amp brands, guitar pedal brands, microphone brands, drum kit brands and keyboard brands within cd liner notes, along with the members of the band and all cleared samples contained within the record. As a member of the music industry, ChrisDown, you should be ashamed of yourself. Imagine if the designers of the programs and hardware you use approached you demanding a slice of any profits you've made from your music. This is the world you and the people who share your beliefs are creating.
