I first listened to BG in/when...

  • I first listened to BG in/when...

no idea if you guys already talked about that one but anyway..

I guess I first listened to BG back in 1996, so that's relatively late.
I don't really know why I actually started listening. The only thing I remember was that I was browsing the Metal CDs at a local store and the CD cover of "Somewhere Far Beyond" looked nice...plus I always was into Fantasy/Tolkien stuff, so I couldn't go much wrong with BG. Anyway since then I'm a big fan of them and will see them live for the first time this year. Somehow I didn't manage to see them on their last tour and I could still curse me for not seeing them during the Nightfall Tour back in 1998...

My cousin burned my brother some Blind Guardian albums (SFB, NIME, forgotten Tales, TT) in 1999 or 2000, and I was very fascinated by "forgotten Tales" at the beginning (the rest was just "heavy metal noise" for me). Later I've made friends with the rest, too. ;-)

My first time was looking for new cds at a local store... I liked some track titles, and I bought Battalions of Fear. My first heavy metal album. (The only one I had by then was Aqua - Aquarium). I changed. Forever.

eehh I don't remember when (2000-2001) whenever my friend started driving :P We where at a music store, and my friend was looking for something new and different. I had another friend that was already shoving awesome metal bands down my throat, so Blind Guardian's CD Somewhere Far Beyond cover caught my eye because it's cover was similar to a lot of the bands my other friend had got me into.

Then in the car ride back I greatly discovered that Blind Guardian was my new favourite metal act ;D

I think my first time was about 1999 when I heard the song Battlefield. I am sucker for classical music and rock but never found a band that fit me. Ever since I heard the opening chords and choral parts kick in I was held in thrall by that one song.

Later I found more of their music at a cd store and bought out all their cds in one swoop and they're been my all time favorite musical group. I am currently looking for any tours they got planned in the states so this may seem offtopic but any help in that area would be appreciated as well.

    FOR THE HORDE!

    ^^

Battlefield wasn't released yet in 99, must have been another song.

I myself had a friend who got me into them in 99 or 2000, can't remember. I started with Somewhere Far Beyond and then gradually got the rest of the catalogue.

  • It was 2000, I think, and a friend of mine made me listen to "The Bard's Song - In The Forest", but I wasn't so much impressed from it. Still, there was something I liked in that song.

So I tried something else from this strange new band, Into the Storm.
    And they caught me, damn!

"We are following the will of the one, through the dark age and into the storm!"

There's no men like me. There's only me.
  • Ah, I still remember...

I don't remember the exact song, but I remember the album. It was Tales From the Twilight World. It was back in 99 I guess. I was at my aunt apartment at the beach and my cousin was showing me the band. I have no idea why, but I remember that day as if it happened yesterday heheheh Ah, the funny thing is that I didnt like it at first o.O Now I can't imagine my life without Blind Guardia... :~ Ok... sweet... touching...

  • I remember, back in 2003 (ok, wasn't that long ago, but still ! I'm only 16 ^^) my brother made me listen to Somewhere Far Beyond, I guess I fell in love with Time What is Time, but I enjoyed the rest too after some heavy listening (30 times the album in one week... I knew the songs by heart by then =D)

Hmm... when I was like 10 or 11 years old (I'll turn 17 in a couple of months). A friend of mine showed me some NIME songs (which were Nightfall or Thorn, can't remember). I was really impressed with their choirs and that stuff, since I only listened to Metallica at that time.

First heard Guardian when i was 14. Im 19 just now. In a music shop (a small independent one near me) I was already a fan of my favourite band Gamma Ray. I heard a band playing, then I heard someone who sounded a lot like Kai Hansen. Asked the guy in the shop if he knew who it was, "Blind Guardian" he said...i asked if the other vocalist was Kai Hansen...it was Lost in the Twilight Hall. Which is still my favourite Blind Guardian song to this day.

Magical story, worthy of a full album I think.

It's been about 4 years since I first heard them and I downloaded everything that was available for free at the old mp3.com website. Since then I've been trying to get my grubby hands on everything, but unfortunately the stupid record stores here wouldn't know good music, if a crate of CDs hit them on the head.

Fortunately I bought their Live DVD and it's fuckin' fabulous. They're so good live.

  • I got Tales from the Twilight World(they need better album names me thinks) about 1.5 years ago, maybe 2.Soon I got them all.

  • It was 2001. I was sitting on a IRC chat with lots of fantasyinterested people. Actually it was a kind of roleplaying-channel.

In those IRC-channels there is always some people who has this script thats sends out a message when a person is listening to a specific song. Back then (and novadays too i guess...) I was very interested in the Lord of the Rings-trilogy. Then i saw someones script indicate: "Someone is now listening to 'Blind Guardian - Lord of the Rings'".

I downloaded it instantly, and well, found it quite good. It was also another song, I think it was Precious Jerusalem (weird, that song shouldnt have been released in december 2001? What ever).

But I really fell in love with the band when i heard Nightfall in early 2002. That was a magic moment. I listened to it lots of times on a very high volume. Found out later that my father has been trying to call me, but i had not heard the phone, even though it lies like 40 cm from my left hand when I'm sitting at the computer.. :P

my friend, member of this group (sti_eagle) borrowed me 2 cd's, first imaginations and then somewhere far beyond...im alive was my first love <3

  • It was in the autumn of '03.

I was sitting in my room and listened to the regional radio station. They played a song and in the chorus I heard something about Moria. and since I'm a total LotR-Fan, at once I wanted to own that song, and looking for it I found something called "By the Gates of Moria" by some band called "Blind Guardian". I bought the CD which contained the track, it was something called "Battalions of fear". When I got it, I listened to it. At first I was disappointed, cause I found out quickly that that track called "By the Gates of Moria" was an instrumental. But I liked the music and soon found out that my cousin was a Blind Guardian-fan, and so he gave me some other albums, and I wasn't idle and collected and bought and asked and finally I'm proud to say that on my pc are now saved all albums and all singles by BG.

    Rather long story, it seems^^

  • I first listened to them this year in February. I found them out from seeing similar artists of DragonForce and looking up information about Power Metal. :)

    ...

It was 2000 I think... I was looking for some Lord of the Rings related songs and I found "Gandalf's Rebirth" on iMesh. I downloaded it and fell in love with every second of it. Then I went to a music shop and bought the only BG album I could find, it was Forgotten Tales. I've been worshipping Hansi since that time. :)

I first listened to BG back in -98. A friend bought NIME, the first song I heard was Nightfall. BG's been my favorite band ever since.

  • A friend sent me the song Curse of Feanor, I really liked the music itself but Hansi's voice bothered me at first! I was not at all familiar with metal at the time. However, it quickly grew on me, now Blind Guardian is one of my favourite bands and I am much more into metal than I was back then. I'd say Blind Guardian is the band that drew me into the world of metal.

Well, I think it was 2003, so not that much time ago. My cousin (he is a hip-hop fan. Funny, isn't it?) Showed me Precious Jerusalem. It was great, so I tried find some more of BG's music...and so on, and so on ;p Guardians started my love for music other than crappy rap and techno...and I am gratefull to them for that ;]
