Do you prefer to write / make music in day or night?

  • Do you prefer to write / make music in day or night?

Just curious to know if anyone finds it easier to write music in the day or night. I find my mind is clearer at night time and have less distractions or im more emotional mindset during the night. In the day my mind is in functional mode and I don't tend to do alot in regards to music. Maybe we use another part of the brain at night thats similar to the dream state, just a thought..

  • Sometimes I have ideas for lyrics and songwriting when I first wake up in the morning. Other times I like to work at night as well :)
I'm not a morning person, so I guess I would prefer night, but some great ideas come to me in the morning :)

  • Interesting I'm definitely not a morning person either but sometimes I wake with bit n pieces of a dream stuck in my head and id forget it if I don't get it down quick.

  • i wake up from dreams sometimes with fully formed, gorgeous songs in my head. getting them down on paper or even better recorded is ridiculously hard because your mind quickly slips out of dream-mode, and what was so clear before becomes fuzzy. i'm also not a morning person. i make most of my tracks at night, often after stumbling home from a party with a melody i've been desperately holding onto for half the night, and often just after lying there in silence for a while. i'm definitely more creative at night, only problem is i have other people in the house so i can't make noise like singing, etc. so i normally leave vocals for the day-time

  • hehe your alot like I am I have people in house too so I do most my vocals when they are out, a soundproofed bedroom would be great but then people might think your some kind of axe murderer ... Think I can remember one dream where I had a great song in it almost beatlesque but as soon as waking it was gone... whether it really was a great song or I was in dreamlike euphoria and it was crap ill never know hehe.. I love a portable device that you could hum into and select an instrument to play it back to you that would be so handy :)

  • I'd like to write some music at night because they'd have darker atmosphere but I'm too sleepy (school :/)

It really doesn't matter if it's day or night. Sometimes I just got an idea for a new song, and I try to record it as soon as I can; and that can happen in daytime or in the night. Looks like most of my songs have a nocturne feeling in them, tho.

This is NOT my racing game?!?

I tend to write lyrics at night, just because when I'm up and about there's other things to do than staring at paper.

I probably prefer recording stuff during the day though. It's not as comfortable for noise to sit in the quiet of night, if that makes sense.

  • Night for me, it's more inspiring and I work 4 days so can't do it then. Weekends I might record during the day. It's not a schedule. I usually record in the evening between about 6 and 11 tho. The neighbours are pretty noisy here so we get away with a bit of later evening noise too - aint it good when people can make noise like real humans living a life? :) I am very much a night owl in general and do most of my stuff on the web after midnight.

  • The only decent stretch of time I have available is night time. Daytime is dedicated to family and work. Though I wish I could spend more time during the day on music. For me, it doesn't matter what time of day it is for me to get inspired - I hear something and "poof" the inspiration and energy are there to draw upon. Often, its a 10-20 minute slice of time I have during the day on the weekends where I can make some of the most dramatic changes in a song. I'f found that its the little things - lttle tweaks here or there - that, if done repeatedly over a week or a month, can build up to a completed song.

And honestly... it has a lot to do with how sleepy I am and how much caffiene I've had. lol ;)

  • mornings and afternoons for lyrics, music at night. when i write lyrics during the nighttime they always end up with too much blue and purple, mornings have more light and yellow.
    this is an interesting question!

when i'm recording, i like to do everything all at once. so generally i work on it during the day. writing occurs in the evening, mostly.

  • Definitely night...I just feel more inspired then. But sometimes if I am inspired enough (e.g. heartbroken or something) it doesn't matter what time of day it is.

  • hmm... I prefer to make music every time I don't have time for it :) and when the time eventually comes, I don't feel like doing anything at all - I'M SO LAZY - but maybe it's better for the music ;) due to my laziness, I usually start making music late at night, cause it's taking me so long to mobilize.

  • Night.

    At night!

  • Day, mostly because I don't fancy the idea of staying up 'til 2 AM just to do guitar overdubs, and I don't want to bother the guy living next to me with my bad singing.

  • I prefer to make music at night but it's sometimes impossible if company is over, so usually it's a mix of both. When you're just twiddling on a synthesizer, you'd figure it wouldn't matter much but I feel like the vibes I get at night are definitely more inspirational, also I like to be around certain folks who can offer some creative feedback. :)

  • I find I'm able to work best when everyone else in the house is asleep or out, so it usually ends up being at night, but sometimes during the day or even early morning if the conditions are right.
