Ok, so this is a pretty pointless group and maybe Morrissey is the god...but you have to admit Texas are much better than M People.

Overall perhaps, but Oceansize and Amplifier reside in Manchester, which colours my perceptions slightly.

I'm a Manc living in Edinburgh but would have to agree with this. My all time two favourite bands are The Bathers & Aztec Camera. Then there's Friends Again, Del Amitri, Love & Money, The Blue Nile, The River Detectives. The only Manc bands I like are The Smiths, James & some Joy Division/New Order songs are good. But we also gave the world John Cooper Clarke.

even though manchester have joy division, new order, the smiths and the fall I have to say glasgow has more quality bands. You cant count the mary chain though as theyre from East Kilbride........as is Roddy Frame

the statement made in the title of this group is probably true, though personally i'd say it's probably about even and joy division > the nation of scotland.

Arctic Monkeys, Milburn, Little Man Tate and a lot of other bands aren't rubbish though, Milburn were given a tough time by all the music press and carried on for as long as they could manage. What are your views on Reverend and the Makers, a band that is quite big but still signed to an independant label? I'm always on the lookout for new bands, There are still people who just love music and won't listen to whatever NME tells them too, Glasvegas are actually good, it's something different and that's what's needed and before you ask, yes they are good live.

you summed it up right there..popular and indie in the one quote...so yes...indie means simply indie as you know and indie when the term was born meant a band not signed and still doing it.. then a few years on the noney men rolled in took the best of them and commercialised them. im thinking James, soup dragons, i ludicrous, brilliant corners etc... and now we are right back where we were...we are all letting thrse freaks tell us what to listen to. and Glasvegas and all the rest of them are shit by comparison...so many good bands going un-noticed but the thign that worries me more is back then at least students and musos were trying to find the new bands..now we just roll over and have our belly tickled.

so you're classing popular indie music as mainstream then : ) Indie in the UK is what is referred to in the US as alternative rock. I agree that the majority of the stuff in NME is shocking, but most of it isn't from Sheffield, but there are still good bands coming through, and it's these that need supporting. You want music that stands for something, try Mongrel.

to be honest id say the only other cities on a par with Glasgow right now are Leeds and London once again after a long absence...IMHO

where do you want me to start...the obvious..artic monkeys..little man tate, pulp, milburn, long blondes...need i go on. all under the guise of Indie when all are signed and can fill halls the length and breadth of the country...i guess its the term that may be wrong then...indie used to mean indie but not its a wank tag for XFM and NME to exploit the very music that used to stand for something...pity people cant see it and not enough people are supporting the underground little bands as they used to...

Who are these mainstream indie bands from sheffield then?

sheffield is on another level? hmmmm - yes if you like mainstream indie that the finance guys peddle and most people lap up like sheep now...as for is Glasgow better for music than Manchester? hmmm now it is..mancs are stuck in the apst celebrating Madchester and the only decent manc band i can think of right now is Amida yet Glasgow is buzzing with great bands...most unsigned while crap like Glasvegas soars ahead cause the sheep bought Alan McGee's dirty little lie :)

Love the premise of the group, though when it comes to it gotta grudgingly admit that there are some good bands from manchester - Joy Division and King of the Slums would be the two stand outs for me. But would love to see it proved in a bear pit between JD including a zombie Ian Curtis vs the original Mary Chain line up. Or Morrissey arm wrestling Dougie Stewart.
