    Outstanding recordings?

    Hallo there from Dresden/Germany!

I am not only new to this group but also kind of a Bach-novice.
Ironically I lived at the "source" for almost 10 years - Leipzig, where Bach worked as a Kantor for so many years and also close to the church where so many of his compositions were brought in public.

I caught the bug when I listened to Andrés Segovia's Interpretations of the "pieces for lute" arranged for guitar a few months ago.

So now I am looking for other outstanding and goose-bump-arousing recordings.
    What are your recommandations?

(I already know Gould's Goldberg Variations and Segovia obviously.)

  • Good Bach Recordings

Simply Baroque with Yo-Yo Ma, good for goose-flesh.
Bach sinfonias and Orchestral movements from cantatas- Sony , Your home town orch.
    Matthaus-Passion, His masterpiece
sonatas and partitias for violin solo, (No. 2 Partita contains the Chaccone)
    'cello suites
Brandenburg concerti, #5 1st movement has amazing harpsichord "cadenza"
If you like gould then listen to his well tempered clavier. These are enjoyable to listen to, perhaps not for goose-flesh, but they will teach you to think and listen to music as bach did.
have fun. Let me know what you find. thanks
    Jesse

  • Hmmm....

Brandenburg Concertos: Concerto Italiano recorded them in 2005, which struck me by GREAT surprise, since they're an Italian Baroque exclusive orchestra. They have the best interpretation of all six Brandenburg Concertos I've heard.

Brandenburg Concerto No. 6: Besides Concerto Italiano, Freiburger Barockorchester, Musica Florea, and Combattimento Consort Amsterdam have the best recordings of the 6th concerto.

Violin Concertos: Definitely Andrew Manze & Rachel Podger with the Academy of Ancient Music. Another good one is Nigel Kennedy with the Berlin Philharmonic.

Oboe Concertos (Concerto for Oboe and Violin, Concerto for Oboe d'Amore): The English Concert, directed by Trevor Pinnock, but the recording is old (made in the 1980s)

Sonatas for Violin and harpsichord: Rachel Podger & Trevor Pinnock, best I've heard. Also Andrew Manze and Richard Egarr, they're pretty good too.

Partitas for solo violin: DEFINITELY Rachel Podger or Viktoria Mullova.

Suites for Solo Cello: Jaap ter Linden or Yo-Yo Ma (baroque cello recordings)

Suites for Orchestra: The 1980s recording with the Academy of Ancient Music, directed by Christopher Hogwood, or The English Concert's recordings.

Suite for Orchestra No. 2 in b-minor: The Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble gave the BEST recording for this (small ensemble, 2 violins, 1 viola, 1 cello, 1 bass, harpsichord and flute solo)

Rosalyn Tureck's recording of The Well-tempered Clavier (AKA the 48 Preludes and Fugues) is wonderful.
