Your JS Bach favourites ?

  • The first movement from St Matthew Passion.

It doesn't matter what you are. It only matters what you do.
  • Ciaconna from Violin Partita No. 2 in d-minor
Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 in B-flat Major (Bach was smart and gave the best instrument the solo parts =D)
    Suite No. 2 in b-minor

  • The St. Matthew and St. John passions in their entirety are my absolute Bach favorites. They're beautiful...

Brandenburg Concerto #4 he'd blow Wembley into the Thames if he was around now ...

  • HARPSICHORDS!

I love his Harpsichord Concerto No. 1 in D Minor (BWV 1052), played by Glenn Gould. But his Badinerie, Air on A G String, and St. Matthew's Passion are also great...plus hundreds of others <3

"What can we know? What are we all? Poor silly half-brained things peering out at the infinite, with the aspirations of angels and the instincts of beasts."
    Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

  • Claviermusic!

For me, it is'nt possible to say, what my favourite is, but I very like the Goldbergvariations played by Ragna Schirmer and Andreas Staier.
Also I like the Harpsichord Concerto in D minor BWV 1052.
And the Art of the Fugue,
    I can't stop.

I don't very like the Brandenburg Concertos, but I don't know, why. :-)

These are my favorite JS Bach recordings (so far!)

These I selected for their "out of body experience" inducing music, they are simply incredible performances:

Anne Gastinel playing the Cello Suites

Hilary Hahn, Violin Partitas & Sonatas (her Chaconne is unbelievable)

Evgeni Koroliov, Goldberg Variations (imho better than Gould even)

I also really enjoy listening to the English Suites (Murray Perahia), and the complete sets of Partitas for keyboard (Richard Goode). Julia Fischer also plays the violin sonatas beautifully.

For the Goldberg variations, you should really listen to the adaptation for string trio (Echnaton Trio) and also for Woodwinds (Homecoming Woodwinds) they are both very deightful and profound performances, almost as though Bach wrote for those instruments.

  • I must say that is Air on the G String BWV 1068. He created such a tears of joy under the stars.

Im no expert but for me I think it would be the Aria which I believe is properly known as "Air On A G String". Its one of those great pieces like the Intermezzo from Mascagnis Cavalleria Rusticana that, for me at least, induces feelings from both ends of the emotional spectrum.

Honourable mention to the Brandenburg Concerto (I dont know which movement it is?) for the amazingly progressive psychedelic Doors-like harpsichord solo!

    Just my uninformed opinions.

Is that the first movement of No. 5 you're talking about?

  • as of now, bwv 565, goldenberg variations and air
