Bad Reputation - Joan Jett

A couple big events heading our way in the next few weeks. There's a little something for everyone.

On Sunday (July 12), the 103.1 Big Day Out comes to SPAC, headlined by The Offspring, Sum 41, and Staind, along with a bunch of other bands. If you're more into the pop rock/emo/electro scene, the What Happens in Vegas tour hits Valentines the same night, with The Cab, The Secret Handshake, and some other bands from the desert you've probably never heard of.

Next Thursday (July 16) is the eighth Camp Bisco festival at the Indian Lookout Country Club in Mariaville, with nearly 50 acts. Sound Tribe Sector 9, Chromeo, and The Orb head up the electronic acts, but there's an impressive number of jam, folk, reggae, and other acts; The Disco Bisguits, Dr. Dog, Damian Marley, Flying Lotus, Nas, even local favorites Phantogram.

If you're looking for something a little harder, next Friday (July 17) the Summer Slaughter 3 Tour hits Northern Lights, with Necropahgist, Ensiferum, Darkest Hour, and a bunch of other bands who sound like they eat kittens.

Of course there are plenty of smaller events in the meantime; Tomorrow (July 8) is the Second WEXT Birthday Party at Valentines with Sgt. Dunbar & the Hobo Banned, Railbird, and Sean Rowe. This Friday (July 10) reach for your revolver and catch Mission of Burma at Pearl Street in Northampton, and locally U-Melt and the McLovins return to Rev Hall in Troy. On Saturday (July 11) a Journey tribute band hits Rev Hall, and In This Moment and Aiden are at Northern Lights. If you miss Camp Bisco on the 16th, Reel Big Fish, The English Beat, and the Supervillains have a show at Northern Lights. And next Saturday (July 18) Jucifer and Bone Parade come to Valentines with a couple of other bands. Plenty to keep you busy in the next few weeks.

Valentine's: The Cliks upstairs ($10, 7:00), with Plushgun opening.

Red Square: Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad and Three Legged Fox ($15, 8:00).

Gaffney's: Local favorites Sirsy play for FREE (9:00).

With the weather we've been having, there's no excuse not to get out there and enjoy it!

Okay, so you already have Saturday mapped out. Well, there's plenty to do Friday night, with maybe too many shows going on. The quick rundown:

Valentines: Eric Margan and the Red Lions, Sgt. Dunbar and the Hobo Banned, We are Jeneric, Salon Style.

Upstate Artist's Guild (Lark St.): Human Host, plus locals Severe Severe, Ghoul Poon, Grab Ass Cowboys.

Red Square: Phantogram, J-Live.

Rev Hall: Rev Theory, Burn Halo, Stuck on Stupid.

This should give you plenty to do, but I have to say, who wouldn't check out a band named Ghoul Poon? Really.

If you're still concious Saturday night, Max Creek and Raisinhead will be at Rev Hall, and and on Sunday Ozomatli and Chali 2na (of Jurassic 5 fame) take the same stage in Troy.

So we may be getting a blizzard today, or something somewhat approaching a blizzard, or maybe just a couple of inches of snow blown out of proportion but it doesn't mean you shouldn't think about going out this weekend.

If you want to start the weekend a little early, The Pretenders are playing the Palace Thursday and there's a Hardcore show at Valentine's.

Friday, Rev Hall has two events for Troy Night Out: A Michael Jackson Tribute from 8:00 to midnight, and after midnight The jerks and McGuillicuddy. $14 for the whole night, or $5 after midnight. Valentines hosts local favorite Aficionado, along with The Gay Blades, Kiss Kiss, and Severe Severe. Nobody's sure where this repetitive band naming will end, but probably somewhere before Alpaca Alpaca. If none of that sounds like your thing, you can catch another local favorite, Sirsy, along with Skidmore, at the Lark Tavern.

Saturday, Rev Hall continues the tributes with Blues for Breakfast, featuring the music of the Grateful Dead. Special parking will be set aside for VW buses. Valentines has a 5 band hardcore set.

Don't let the weather keep you in, folks, remember these clubs are heated.

If you can brave the cold and head down by the river in Troy, you can catch Dr. Dog and Delta Spirit at Revolution Hall. You can call them both indie rock, but that's only scratching the surface. Dr. Dog is maybe sorta like Beatles meets Black Keys meets Cold War Kids with a little extra something here and there. Delta Spirit is some kind of rock n' soul dealie. But really, we all know you've got nothing better to do at 9:00 on a Wednesday, so just go check it out.

Think you're good at Guitar Hero? Did you thrash through Buckethead's insanely difficult bonus track like you were an 8 year old with ADHD? Well, the man himself is coming to Northern Lights tonight to show you how it's really done. If you don't know who Buckethead is, check out some of his videos and be amazed.

You know, other than that not much is happening. Actually, including that, not much is happening. The Lark Tavern has a handful of guys with guitars on Friday, and locals Rocky Velvet on Staurday. Valentine's has alt-country band Two Cow Garage on Saturday. And you can check out the shiny, new EMPAC at RPI (complete with suspended, 260-degree screen) with Saturday's hip hop fest including Madlib, J.ROCC, and juiceboxx.
