No More Track Embedding?

  • I agree with all of the above, especially the pointing out the 'removing features without telling anyone'-part and the 'hello, is there any staff out there?'-part.
I have/had a lastfm player on my mspace to offer additional full length tracks to the visitors and had often considered using it instead of the one provided by mspace. all my tracks are set to fulllength preview but right now the player does'nt play anything.

so, dear last.fm, what are your 2 cents?

No prob. That's what makes these here world wide interpages work! (Please read that last sentence in a 49er, gold-prospector voice.)

I'd rather use last.fm, but I need to go with whatever works. So far fairtilizer is working like a champ for my particular needs. I hate the name though. The first ten times I looked at it, I thought it said "fart-ilizer."

I am kind of disappointed that no one from last.fm has commented on this thread. They're usually pretty good about chiming in here on the label forum. I mean, I remember when they switched over to this new layout and there was constant interaction in the big thread over how ugly the new interface was and now silence on this!?

    Bummer.

  • This is a major disappointment to me as well especially considering I have a huge catalog of songs and have spent tons of time embedding and making playlists as well as uploading. I'm moving to Fairtilizer, which does seem to say Fart illizer. I own my own music as do other labels so I don't understand why indies can't embed their own music, what does that have to do with licensing

  • Hi all,

We're very sorry this thread seems to have been overlooked. We are in current discussions regarding the future of this feature, and all your comments will be taken on board as priority.

We'd also like to say that we appreciate labels using Last.fm; we do not wish to undermine anyone's contribution to the site via uploading music and enriching our user experience, and will ensure that we keep you updated on this situation. Disappointment certainly isn't something we wish to engender, rather we hope to meet your high expectations as users of the site.

    Thanks,
    Helen

  • Well I did find out after a while that Fairtillizer doesn't allow backcatalog releases on their site, I like their embedding options but I was looking for a place to put up my backcatalog with embedding capability. I'll keep watch here to see about things changing

Doesn't allow backcatalog releases? I don't understand. You can upload anything you want. I've uploaded 6 albums already and all are available and streaming...

Yes, I don't understand this statement either. Where does it say no backcatalogue releases? I'll be the first to admit that the site isn't the most intuitive to use, so it'd be nice if you could point us in the right direction...

I run IFF Transponder Recordings. Lots of free music available from our artists at their pages:

City Seventeen - Instrumental/'Post' Rock, for fans of Do Make Say Think, Fly Pan Am etc
    e.p. hall - Intelligent & creepy anti-folk
Line Spectra - Electronic/Drone, for fans of Autechre, Aphex Twin etc
Sarah Lain - Sweet Indie Pop/Rock. To try it is to like it!
    Thomas J - Genre-defying singing/songwriting
    Toma - Epic Post Rock
  • Hi all,

To keep to the site in hand (as it were) and keep everyone updated on the situation, here's what we hope is a comprehensive explanation of the embeddable playlist situation as it stands:

Earlier this year we launched two new initiatives in the form of Free On Demand listening and the Artist Royalty Program. These had the objective of improving accessibility to our catalogue for users, and offering payment to the artists and labels who provide us with that catalogue.

Royalty rates for streaming generally operate on two tiers: radio play, or on-demand listening. With on demand listening, the user can specify which track or tracks they listen to; with radio the user has much less control over what tracks are played. With on demand streaming, advertising provides us revenue which is then shared by the music rights holder in the form of royalties. Playlists didn’t contain advertising, and neither do they qualify as radio stations due to the fact that specific songs can be selected and played, and so at this stage we have retired them.

We do however recognise the benefits for Music Manager users of being able to upload music to Last.fm then put it wherever you want, including in playlists. Therefore we’re looking at a way to bring playlists back, in a new incarnation built specifically for artists and labels, compatible with the Artist Royalty Program and other initiatives.

    Thanks,
    Helen

  • Crikey, that was quick - only three months to answer that one.

If it takes another three months to reintroduce a method of embedding playlists we'll probably all have found a different site to fulfil our needs.

  • Hiya,

Again we can only apologise for missing out on this thread before, we won't make any excuses but human error. We do recognise the demand for this feature and hope to have the resources to implement it sooner rather than later.

    Thanks,
    Helen

It said that in their help section & aside from that I still haven't been approved as a label for over a week.
I've just decided to use archive.org and do my own embeds locally on my site as they allow direct linking of any files put up there. (example: http://piemerica.org/MARS/eps.html) I'm really more of an organization freak than one who cares about people hearing my music. I've only gotten a few plays with all I have here at Last.fm

  • lame.

  • Hi all,

To keep you updated on events, we're still looking into this as a priority for improving artists' and labels' experience of the site and are moving forward with plans to reintroduce embeddable playlists.

    Thanks,
    Helen

  • Hope this happens soon. PS Maybe some kind of notice can go out to label accounts when this happens? Most of us don't necessarily spend all our time checking to see what progress Last.fm's made on this issue...

Keep up the good work, overall!

  • Hiya,

We'll definitely be letting people know with a more widespread message when this functionality is available, this thread should keep you up to date on events up until that time.

    Thanks,
    Helen

  • i am really looking forward to it...

  • Please get the artist embeddable playlist function back online soon! It is the main reason I joined this website as an artist!

  • Yep - I agree - I joined for the same reason. I want to get people listening to my label's music. If I have to force them to come to last FM and subscribe, I'm going to lose potential listeners. If I'm offering free downloads, I can't see what the problem would be.
I would not expect to genererate royalties from music embedded on my site, but the number of plays should possibly increase my exposure on Last.FM radio.

  • Why not put ads in the players?

Perhaps a redesign of the player could include a small banner or scroll-text advertisement; of course, in that case player plays would have chip in a royalty...

I just want my embeddable players again, durn it.

Could be a good idea, as long as the ads weren't obtrusive and annoying, as well as being topical and relevant....Maybe this could be another route for labels and artists to use the banner campaigns?

  • Hiya,

Thanks all for the feedback on this.

    Cheers,
    Helen

  • scrobbling

dont know how hard this would be, but it would be amazing if these players could scrobble to the listener's last.fm profile too (if they were logged in of course)

  • me too!

I am also disappointed by this change - "embeddable" tracks was the reason I started uploading stuff here - it would be great to get this back.

  • CBS CBS

Believe it or not, when CBS bought Fender guitars in 1967, they ruined the company, that's why the early fenders are worth £16,000, whereas anything after '67, pretty cheap.

It is quite simple, context is a form of content. If I spend hours and hours investing MY data onto a site, I'm actually a major contributor. Last.fm is a community, we all create content. Stopping people from sharing devalues that community, it makes people less keen to use the service, and so the city could become a ghost town with a few more steps in this direction.
