No More Track Embedding?

  • No More Track Embedding?

Has the ability to embed tracks from Last FM into other sites disappeared in the upgrade? Huge bummer if so. Or am I missing something.

    Thanks gang,

    Cam

I was about to ask the same thing. Making tracks embeddable was a very good motivation for uploading to last.fm.

I suppose not every artists wants people embedding their music any and everywhere, but it would be great for those of us that do to have the option... a little "make track embeddable" tick box somewhere in the music manager would be very useful.

  • This is why I came to the forum today, too. It appears that all previous embedding code still works. My embedded playllists still function and individual songs I embedded still function as well. It seems that the links where you'd normally get the embedding code, etc. have merely vanished from last.fm. Perhaps, since existing embeds still work, this is one of those features that will be reappearing?

Additionally: going to music manager > manage > playlists and trying to embed any of our playlists, I find myself on the familiar page where I can customise the widget etc. BUT: as content it shows my personal recently played tracks instead of the label playlist I just chose to embed!?
Luckily the old previously embedded playlists work fine. We use those on many places to preview our releases and drive people to last.fm. Obviously we consider this function very important! Hoping the embedding problem will be fixed asap...

  • i think this has to do with this licensing issue. read this thread:
    http://www.last.fm/group/Last.fm+Beta/forum/95114/_/412802/2#f6828042

though i hope that embedding playlists comes back for bands

Thanks for the link, I guess that has indeed something to do with this.
I hope there'll be a way to embed label/band playlists in the future... In the meantime we'll have to look for other options, it seems. :-(

  • Other options indeed. Since the change we've taken to using Imeem for embeddable tracks (and playlists) - they work a treat. Those embeddable features are really important for labels (and artists of course) so it's a real shame that they seem to be missing. I haven't tried the label based playlists since the track embedding went but I'm assuming that stil functions as it's still available in the music manager.

  • Hmm just out of interest I just tried to embed one of our label playlists and it seems that option has been disabled as well. Then if you go to the label page and look under Playlists you'll see this message at the bottom of each of your playlists, "Subscribers can listen to playlists once they contain 45 tracks by 15 different artists.".

These new developments (all seemingly coming from the subscriber based push) are majorly crummy for indie labels and independent artists. In my opinion it really weakens the notion of "open discovery" that made Last FM something special for both music listeners and music makers.

    My 2 cents worth,.

I used the embed player on my site so I could see how many people listened to my music, even if they didn't have the client.
Since this service now is terminated (without letting us know by email or anything...) last.fm only scrobbles tracks played by people who have the last.fm client running. Which is a big difference.

It 'seems last.fm forgot why it became so popular for musicians, because small bands and artists got the opportunity to let people listen to there music.
Visit the homepage today and see who gets the priority. Foo Fighters, The Kooks... the people who don't need attention !

Indeed. No more embedded playlists, also label journals gone, group recommendations gone... doesn't look that bright at the moment. :-(

I must add that it's not all hopeless, though; as a music lover & last.fm user I'm still able to find great new stuff from last.fm all the time. So I guess it still "works" to some extent at least. :-)

  • The Staff here is usually really good about responding to posts like this, which I love about this forum.

Anyone from the staff care to weigh in on these concerns and shed some official light on them?

  • well, have a look at this blog post: http://blog.last.fm/2008/08/22/rockband-2-radio

looks like an embedded playlist to me.

    Nope...

"looks like an embedded playlist to me. "

Whatever, but the fact remains that the label playlists cannot be embedded via the music manager anymore. The embed link still takes me to the widget page where I could embed "my recently played tracks" only. Useless. :-(

  • Full tracks changed to 30 second previews

I embedded a playlist to play our album in its entirety on our website, but now it only plays 30 second previews of each track. Is there a way to change this back so that the whole of each song plays?

I noticed that the "embed" link in music manager doesn't work properly any more, as skorpio says. Useless indeed!

I noticed the same (30 sec. instead of full tracks), probably this is related to the new "no embed" policy.

No-one around here seems to care enough to comment. Other options, here we come. Bye for now...

    No thanks

No more full-length embed of my own music?

I advertised last.fm and drove people to this site - but in return my website visitors now listen to 30 seconds previews of my own tracks eventhough I explicitly set all my tracks full-length? and now embed functionality was hidden from artists aswell? Is this going to be Napster No.2, subscription only?

No thanks, then I rather take all my stuff outta here and have 0 seconds previews on last.fm instead - to go somewhere else where artists are still welcome to publish their full length music to EVERYONE! I generate visitors, traffic and income from ads - and embedding the player is all I expect in return.

I've always been a very fair user of last.fm embeds. I've only embedded my latest tracks, accompanied with huge advertisements for last.fm in return. Now I feel betrayed. Where is the official statement?

I hope this is not true!

Completely agree. If that option isn't reinstated, watch everybody migrate to other sites. I'm off to investigate that right now...

    Re: no thanks

What are they thinking? last.fm guys, why do you think do the majors put their stuff onto this website? That's right, because it is widely in use and wellknown on earth. Why do you think it is widely in use? Because all the indie and scene musicians brought you all the people, because you offered them full length hosting of their tracks, available to EVERYONE, long before the majors started throwing their releases after you guys.

If you drive the zeitgeist people away who are responsible for you having contracts with all the majors (because of last.fm's incredible diversity and database), the competition will take over your position, because the independant musicians are only the top of the pyramid who will start leaving.

We don't need last.fm, but you need us. Unless ofcourse you want this site to be just another one of hundreds sites where people can listen to major artist music only. It will not work out longterm - in that case sell this site quickly enough before it's dieing or superceded.

Reinstate full functionality, otherwise this will become just another site soon to be forgotten. Licensing cripples and limited functionality is always the beginning of the end.

last.fm is incredibly cool, but subscription only will NOT work. this is 2008! implement new functionality for labels to choose if they want full length previews for subscribers or for everyone, or if they want regional limitations. there are more than enough indie musicians who are NOT interested in this and who decided NOT to go major labels because of exactly this bullshit. We want our music available for EVERYONE. If you can't do this anymore, we will move away. Competition is welcoming us with open arms.

Sorry for these harsh words, but I have no understanding for this. Let people CHOOSE to subscribe, if they want to join the community. But never force them why limiting their functionality in a way like this.

Congratulations for all the majors, last.fm - you've did well. But don't forget about the rest of us, give us more options to bring back the old functionality - unlimited and available to everyone!

    ACCEPT NO LIMITATIONS!

    Update

Just for everybody to know: For whatever reason full-length previews work again using the inline player. If this is not a temporary bug: THANK YOU LAST.FM!

Is there any statement if this feature will stay?

  • I'm more concerned with the ability to embed a single track with a little flash button, like you used to be able to. Will this return? Anyone know of any other sites I can go to get this functionality back?

The embed link from the playlist in the music manager still only takes you to a 'recently listened to' tracks chart though, which is still pretty bloody useless.

  • For those of you still interested I found a solution for my problem:

    http://fairtilizer.com/

You can upload high-quality MP3s and embed individual tracks easily with cut and paste code in multiple sizes (inluding the small, standalone play-pause button style that last.fm used to offer).

    Enjoy!

  • (first of all please forgive me for any english mistakes - I'm a german)

It's a pitty that this function has been removed.

I registered to last.fm for the reason to embed a player on our homepage with the uploaded songs of my own band... like on the page of Jan Hegenberg (a german artist) http://janhegenberg.de/cms/news/.
anyway... I am also a subscriber and it seems now, that there ain't any possibilities for artists to embed playlists.
some weeks ago I had at least the chance to create such a "wrong" playlist... but now it seems all functions to do something like that are gone... or am I wrong?

Why isn't here a comment by a moderator up to now?
I am a software developmer too, but that's a shame!
That problem exists for about two months and isn't corrected until now...

Hopefully there will change something as soon as possible :(
Otherwise I have to look for other options...

It would be nice to know if the feature will come back and if yes when... I guess that would be the least they can do!
Our new homepage is ready to go public and the last thing missing is an embedded player...

    lg Max

PS: @transducr: thx for the link - maybe i have to use the competitor in future...
