LastFM client freezes my iTunes temporarily

Everytime I open up itunes, the lastfm client opens up and i get a box saying
"preparing for ipod scrobbling, don't unplug your ipod or exit itunes" then after about a minute it says "last.fm is now ready for ipod scobbling"

This never happened until I updated the lastfm client and it really annoys me because I have to wait about a minute before I can use my itunes.

anyone know what i should to do correct this issue? i'm on mac osx 10.6.4

I'm on the same mac as you and I see the little pop up top right. You can still use iTunes, it's not frozen. Just click on iTunes. The pop up fades in its own time.

Hmm. I'm able to click on my iTunes and shift it out of the way of the pop up, then click in the search bar ready to type. No beach ball. Pop up still there.

So that means it's something else causing the delay. Any clues in the Activity Monitor?

what am i looking for in the activity monitor? i've never used that before

The Activity Monitor tells you what's doing what on your machine and how much memory they use while in operation.

You're looking for anything out of the ordinary. You can Google anything you see in Activity Monitor if you don't know what it is. Something eating up the memory for instance. Depends how often you get the beachball. Do you see it a lot or just for this task?

With my machine, sometimes I see the beachball a lot if the internet's slow (evenings, weekends), or if I've left something open for a long time. iTunes can be tricksy too, has to be said. It behaves better on a Mac than PC, it loads faster, but I still think it's clunky.

Do you have the latest version of iTunes?

If you still think it's the client, you could do a fresh reinstall. You'd have to completely wipe the one you have now first though. It's probably fine. When mine's idle, it uses less than 2% CPU, and about 6% in use, give or take. My iTunes uses 0.1% idle and about 3% in use, give or take.

If you have a bunch of other stuff open, that will slow things down on your machine.

If you've never done any housekeeping on your machine, that might be a factor too. Stuff like keeping the desktop tidy, trash empty, clear cache from time to time, temporary internet files. All this stuff eats up memory unnecessarily. You'll find mac tips on keeping your machine tidy all over the web. (you probably already know this bit but thought I'd throw it in anyway)

If it's still happening after you've checked the above, post back, maybe there's some more troubleshooting we can do.

I'm having the same problem when I launch iTunes. iTunes seems to freeze as Last.fm is loading, clicking on anything in iTunes brings up the spinning beach ball.

The problem only started after the last update from Last.fm

    I'm on 10.6.5

I have a "slightly" worse problem, after installing the last version of the last.fm software my iTunes doesn't start. It launches the process but it dies seconds after that.

Starting in safe mode works. The only plugin I have is the last.fm, there is definitely a bug in it.

    I'm using iTunes 10.1 (54).

  • same issue here. quite annoying, and is definitely the Last.fm plugin. Beachball goes away once the "Last.fm ready for scrobbling" pop-up appears, but it takes a solid 30-60 seconds for that process to complete.

    Needs a fix

another thing my client just started doing about 20 mins ago:

when the song changes, the name of the song pops up on the top right of my screen. SUPER annoying considering I use the iTunes mini player. can't seem to find anything in the settings to turn it off. help??

EDIT: NVM, another application installed GROWL behind my back and those were the updates that kept popping up

    this happens very frequently to me, not only when starting up;
out of nowhere, while a track is playing, itunes will stop responding and i'll get a spinning beach ball. The track will keep playing though, and any commands to pause, stop, skip, etc. won't register until itunes "unfreezes". Likewise if a song ends while iTunes isn't responing, it won't play the next one until the beachball goes away.

From what I've looked at on various forums here and on apple site and others, it seems like this problem goes away when Last.fm.app is uninstalled (not just quit) ... so it's some kind of Library or Preferences/Registry problem? like iTunes and/or Last.fm.app is trying to look something up, I don't know.
    somebody please deal with this?

    I'm using os x 10.6.5, iTunes 10.1, and Last.fm.app 1.5.4

Bumping this again ... it's incredibly annoying. Please address this bug, it occurs every time you start iTunes. It's getting to the point where I'm considering removing Last.fm.
