Volume Normalize?

Volume Normalize?

Currently tracks played in LastFm client app can have different loudness, how about an option to nozmalize volume to be equal all the time without user need to turn volume up and down ?

Yes, i have seen and read it
Staff implement that? That's unpossible!
These are ideas that have been brought up before and declined for whatever reason.

Normalize/ReplayGain audio levels - This is a problem with the files themself on the server, and if we were to employ on the fly normalizing the sound would become very shitty to be quite honest. All newly imported tracks to our streaming server are getting MP3Gained, but as for the older tracks, that is a massive task in itself.
but why not to try to make it like in Winamp normalize plugin? Let client make it if user wish to, if not satisfied with quality - disable. Just an option )

It tells you that the sound would become very shitty. You even quoted it. That's why it isn't done through the client (on the fly) and why the files are being normalised on the server right now.

as i remember xmms has a plugin with on the fly volume normalize, the results arent that bad ...
Analyzing and adjusting WaveVolume mixer regulator does not have any impact on quality or performance )

If you feel that to be needed, your client does offer the option to stream to an external player (Tools - options - radio). Let your Winamp handle the normalization.

thanks for an idea, but how to i make winamp listen on certain port ? ) sorry, havent found any option in winamp settings or anything in winamp help

I find that volume levelling is a big problem for me as well, It means constantly adjusting the volume control for each track as it plays, which puts me off listening to last.fm as I work. Until they stopped streaming to the UK the other day, I was listening to Pandora, which doesn't suffer from variable volume. I'm still discovering last.fm, getting used to its different ways of working, but so far the volume changing is the biggest irritation that could put me off.

agreed. I like last.fm a lot, but the DRASTIC difference in volume levels is a definite turn-off to the service. And unless the source of the track is of poor quality, normalizing the volume on the track shouldnt make the track sound any better or worse. You're just increasing or decreasing the gain on a track to a standardized level.

It hasn't really been mentioned in this thread but volume normalization is going on in the back end servers. So the problem is being solved, there's just a few million tracks to get through.

I've got the same problem. Is there a timeline when this is done? I know there are a lot of tracks, but now is mid of june and I nearly can't use last.fm at work because the differences between the sound volumes of each track is very huge..

Sorry but "it is impossible" is complete nonsense. Winamp has very good normalizer support. It works through the nullsoft signal processing studio plugin. It is called: Project Normalizer Now i'm not claiming you will never here change, but this one works really well. Though it is streaming, the calculation can be based on the audio buffer.

You're the only person to say impossible in this thread. You were told it is being done, and due to the sheer numbers of files concerned, that it is taking a while.

Great that this is being worked on. It is my nr. one problem with last.fm: turning th volume of the music up... down.... up again..

Is work in progress, all new tracks are being normalized by default. Older ones will be fixed progressively though being our music database dynamic is not like we can figure out a date or something.

I had the voiume on full for like 10 songs or so and forgot I had it that loud because the songs i where listening to where the same volume. Odd. Then BAM!

Ouch man! Can there be a possible lawsuit because of this similar to the i-Pods?

One would think it would be easier to process the songs initially to get a volume adjustment ratio and then let the client handle it, not that I really care except for the fact that I need constant active involvement to keep my music from being at a consistent sound level.
