Problems with Mac OSX Leopard

  • hooray for fuckload!

I would like to point out that the phrase "a fuckload of problems" is exactly what I want to see. I mean, I'd rather see "here's the fucking upgrade," but lacking that, a statement like that is honest and open, and quickly expresses the fact that they KNOW there's something wrong, they're working on it, and it's way messier than you'd expect.

    Hooray for fuckload!

(if it helps, I was having trouble with last.fm before the upgrade, and it dumped a METRIC fuckload of huge temp xml files that I had to delete for disk space, like failed scrobbles or something.)

I hereby apologise to the tiny fraction of the 5% of our userbase who are Mac users for offending them by the use of the word "fuckload." We'll try and be more corporate and sterile in future.

    Yours sincerely,

    A Mac User.

I hereby suggest "truckload" as the official replacement going forward.

  • TWO ICONS -- HOLY SHIT!! UGH!!!

I ALSO HAVE TWO ICONS POPPING UP. UGH, HELP... THIS OS IS ONLY 5 DAYS OLD... YOU GUYS SHOULD HAVE PREDICTED THIS UNDER OS 8 WHEN TELNETING INTO INTERNET GOPHER WAS SO UNDERGROUND. i'm totally joking around. thanks for creating a free client and busting your butts to get this fixed. i DO have two icons under leopard, but that's the least of my worries.

Language, two icons, crashes and no scrobbling

I was surprised to see the language used by those providing a service I pay a subscription for. I use the f word myself, no problem with it per se, but if a shop assistant at a till used the word to me I'd take great offence. I would never use the f word in front of a client or customer.

But my actual point: The last.fm software stopped working for me altogether from the moment I upgraded to Leopard. It's the only application I've had a problem with, and obviously it's a big problem. It loads twice, then crashes and never, ever scrobbles.

It makes me wonder what the last.fm software is wanting to do that the other applications I use - and there are many - don't.

As for being 'corporate and sterile' in future, you take our money so we expect some common courtesy and a little respect. If that's too much to ask, do write to me and let me know that a full refund of my subscription will be forthcoming. Otherwise, politeness is the order of the day.

In public service if a customer were to use that language to, say, a bus driver or train conductor, they'd wind up on a charge. Why not try being respectful to your customers, those who pay for the full service and those who don't?

    Andy

  • If you take offense at the mere word fuckload and/or fuck, you really have no place in social gatherings.

If some of the last.fm staff were to say "fuck you, x", I'd see where you're coming from, but getting offended by a word in itself is a mindset that really doesn't fit into our modern day and age.

Yeah we keep that kind of language for the office.

We have this strict policy here:

Actually, we did test the client in leopard as soon as we got a development copy a couple of weeks ago - however we didn't manage to iron out all the bugs quite in time.

Apologies, but we can only work so fast!

Well, I apologise if anyone took any offence to my choice of language. For what it's worth, I had no intentions of insulting anyone, and I don't believe I did, nor did I wish to offend anyone.

It was a quick and mindless act of stating how we're aware that the client is incredibly lacking when it comes to Leopard support, and was more degrading to the work and effort we had made on the software. It was not aimed at any of our users for being a Leopard user. Nowhere was I mocking anyone, or using the "f" word in direct reference to anyone.

    Sorry.

I don't take offence at such words at all per se, using them myself often enough. I can't speak for anyone else, but for me it's a question of context. I believe it was offensive for a last.fm member of staff to use a variant of the f word in the context of these forums. I don't believe the context was appropriate, coming from a professional in response to queries from customers - understandable, yes, no doubt, as the problem is likely to be as frustrating as any other technical issue can be.

And of course it wasn't used against anyone. Was anyone suggesting it was? Of course, whether you think socially everyone freely uses the word in every given situation (they don't) is by-the-by; there are those in the world who find the word offensive, full stop, and don't consider context at all. last.fm is a service that lots of different people use. It doesn't pay to cause offence unnecessarily.

mustaqila has apologised. Everyone has their off moments. So unless anyone is out for blood, let's drop this and get back to the point of this topic.

  • So back to the topic...

What I get on Leopard is two last.fm icons running in the dock, the window opens fine and automatically starts playing my last station played. When I play an iTunes track, the last.fm window is properly reflecting the track. The second icon is just sitting in the dock, with a status of "application not responding" but doing no apparent harm (other than cosmetic). If I quit from the working last.fm window, the other icon sticks around. If I force quit the stalled icon task, it seems to have no effect except to remove that task and icon.

BTW, I would agree that use of the f-word was probably not appropriate by a last.fm staff member in this forum but I enjoyed the frankness of the response. Appreciate the last.fm presence here to respond and indicate you are listening and working on the issues.

    Lee

    Leopard support...

Any idea how lengthy a time period we're talking about until Last.fm is fully operational on Leopard?

    Airtunes

First of all thanks to the support team. Filed a bug report and I was personally informed, this problem was well known and referred to this thread.

But as you are just working on the Mac client and I just got myself an Airport Express station, wouldn't Airtunes support be great for the last.fm radio? Or ist Airtunes designed to be an iTunes only feature by Apple?

If a man speaks in the forest, and there is no woman there to hear him, is he STILL wrong?

  • it yet doesnt seem to work for the new front row, does it? when i play my songs in frontrow (which, although isnt compatible to my songs in itunes- itunes stops playing when i hit the remote to activate frontrow) it wont scrobble

You should be able to use Airfoil to stream the Last.fm radio to your AirTunes: http://www.rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/mac/

Come on guys, you haven't even fixed the helper bug that you were told about in July...see: http://www.last.fm/forum/34905/_/301851

It does seem that the OS X version suffers from a severe lack of maintenance to be honest. The Windows version, I never had a problem with, but the Mac version has been crap ever since I started using it. To be honest, it needs a complete rewrite, and not using QT either.

Why not just do a lite version, which simply scrobbles tracks from players without the radio, the artist info and all the extra crap?

Never argue with a fool. Onlookers may not be able to tell the difference....

    @wazzamatazz

Thanks, will test it, too bad it's 25$. Is there any known freeware doing the same thing? I usually hesitate using commercial software...

I have the same problem under Leopard: Last.fm just doesn't lauch, but doesn't really crash either. And it starts up when I launch my computer, while it isn't in my startup items. I don't use it: I use Audioscrobbler, but it keeps popping up when I log in, and there's no way to disable this, while the program itself doesn't work. My computer can't shut down either, unless I force-quit the Last.fm client.

    Me too!
I love using Last.fm but my new mac I don't want him to break!!

Wow, even as a joke I haven't heard such a badly listed bunch of buzzwords since I saw an argument on Neowin about who actually made the internet. At least this list is posited as sarcasm!

    Back to the topic:
Another leopard user experiencing client lockups on last.fm startup. Fix the fucking thing(tm).

    :)

(just saw another thread mentioning an updated client, checking it out)

  • to me, saying "fuckload" sounds much better than those stupid marketing words. some people may prefer a corporate attitude but at least this was way more honest.

seriously, some westerners(no offence, lol) spend a lot of time waiting to be offended and then enjoy blaming others for being offensive.

    enough ranting :)

    Only minor problems after upgrade

Luckily, my only problems are having two icons and needing to force quit. Last.fm didn't work at all after I installed Leopard, so I uninstalled Last.fm and then reinstalled. Otherwise, the client is working fine for me.

Just FYI for the development team.

Will there be an update by 2008?

  • I managed to get rid of the second dock icon by downloading Qt 4.3.2 and installing it manually, then removing the Frameworks directory inside Last.fm.app and relaunching. However that doesn't solve the other issues.

I suspect this is a Qt thing?

Oh, and although I was able to get the code from SVN, it is not at all clear what is needed to get it to build :-(

    to last.fm staff team...

please kindly make an announcement once bug is fixed for Leopard users.

I suffered this problem with going back to apple dealer to CHANGED my 2 new 2GB RAM in my mac book pro MAC OSX 10.5, as i thought it's the non-compatibility of those RAM sticks, but now i reckon it's not, poor guys from Apple, they did the FREE change installment for me.. hahahah....

my problem not just crashed, every time i start safari, a "RESTART" computer message pop up with a black screen. OR i can't shut down my computer even i didnt launch last software, so i delete that completely from my harddrive to fix this problem temporary..

please FIX the bug as soon as possible, as streaming music through last.fm softwares is part of my life, lucky i still keep my old powerbook G4, now i stream my station & scrobble my track from iTunes there as the back up.

    thanks!!
