Germany To Outlaw Paintball

  • Germany To Outlaw Paintball

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8041320.stm

The German government says it plans to ban combat games such as paintball, in response to a recent school shooting.

The new measures being proposed to parliament also include tighter gun control rules and give officials the right to conduct checks on gun owners.

Anyone defying the proposed new rule could face a 5,000-euro (£4,474) fine.

Sixteen people, including the gunman, were killed in the school shooting in March. Relatives of the victims say the new measures do not go far enough.

    'Biometric controls'

Under the proposed rules, the authorities would be given more right to ensure weapons are safely locked up.

It is also thought that "biometric controls" for gun storage might be introduced, the BBC's Steve Rosenberg in Berlin reports.

That would mean that anyone owning and storing guns at home would need to use their own fingerprint to open the safe or cupboard, our correspondent says.

Berlin also plans to ban games like paintball and laser-tag that simulate killing on the grounds that they trivialise and encourage violence.

But relatives of those killed in the March attack in the town of Winnenden, near Stuttgart, are calling for an outright ban on pistols and high-calibre weapons.

"There cannot be a second Winnenden," Hardy Schober, whose daughter was killed in the attack, told a news conference in Berlin.

I'm from Chicago, since January over 30 teenagers have been killed "by guns" (gang related) in this city as they like to portray it on the news... the guns are not the problem. The kid who went on a rampage was clearly on medication (*antidepressants)... Trying to tighten gun laws will only create more problems in the near future, mark my words. And paintball, really?

I completely disagree. I'm from Glasgow, we have quite a big gang problem, and there is very little shootings, they rarely happen. I think we have the highest stabbing rate in Europe though. In Britain you do get the occasional shootting in London or Liverpool but they are not common. We don't have guns legal. Maybe it is just an American thing that shootings are so high.

We're doped up on medication daily, a huge percentage of teens are on antidepressants or they take sleeping pills that they get attached to and it ruins their health over time. Not only do we have "less gangs and guns" in this city compared to other major cities in the States, but we also have the highest murder rate in America!

"CHICAGO (AP) - An outburst of gunfire rattled the city during the weekend, with at least nine people killed in 36 separate acts of violence. The shootings were reported from Friday until Monday morning, police spokeswoman Monique Bond said Monday. They included gang shootings, drive-by attacks, and even one case in which someone used an AK-47 to shoot up a plumbing supply store.

These types of attacks are by young teenagers, some of the victims are as young as 12 years old. People need to look deeper than just "where did he get that gun? why did he do it?"... what medication was he on? is a question people are finally starting to ask, you can't overlook the persons mental health.

  • If guns were illegal, less guns would be available, only people would had foreign connections could get them.
They never will be illegal. Crazy republican bastards won't accept it and the National Firearms Asscoiation is too powerful. The problem is America has got too much of a gun culture. You don't get any of the mass murders that happen in America often, happening much in Europe (Winnenden being an exception).
Britain illegalised most guns after we had our massacre (Dunblane)

  • Hi everybody! :>

I'm from Germany. We'll actually have elections this year here and the parties wich are in the government want to keep the voters with them, so they are discussing to ban violent video games and to intensify the laws regarding weapons.
Banning weapons from the public is a good thing and has to continue, but doing the same with paintball and other games is CRAP for me. There will also be tighter controls in the houses of gun owners to be sure the weapons are kept safely and no one else can access them (they must be kept in a safe).
But there must be more to do. No one's asking the students to help them with their problems. Sure, no problem can be strong enough to justify murder but some of them do have serious problems.

We were in Amsterdam with our class when the massacre in Winnenden happened. It shocked the whole nation. Some students were even scared of going to school. We need to stop this.

  • Is it just me or does the German government seem to have a long history of problems with this sort of thing? That is to say, do they have a history of missing the forest for the trees when it comes to social issues?

If you morons stop electing twats like those who are in power over there, you wouldn't be having such restrictions over there!

  • Yeah, our government has it's problem with social issues. They rather start banning things than looking at the problem itself. But fact is: stronger weapon laws can't be wrong at all.

We are far away from the Nazi state. I can't stand those Nazi idiots!! And calling us morons is bullshit by the way. We have some issues and your country has problems too. But I would never call your people morons.

And as I said: They're only discussing those things. They won't (and can't)introduce all those changes to the law. It's just a good topic for the elections this September, wich works in the media. And every politician uses the media.

Ignore Shades Oflce, he's a tough guy. It never fails to amaze me how governments knee jerk to these things. Instead of actually tackling any problems that arise, they instead ban anything that even vaguely reminds them of the afforementioned issue.

At a time when the german government is trying to show the world how its form of capitalism is superior, this shows just how it can be wrong.

To play paintball in Germany, you have to be 18 or above.. the school shooter was actually 17. Enough said!

Simple like here in states there is laws that are never used and why they create new ones they had some already in place just never used them.

  • They would never be able to ban guns over here.

I can drive 5 miles and buy a crack rock; if I wanted to pop a person in the head I could just as easily buy a gun, if they was banned.

I'm not really for the person breaking in my house having the only gun.

Yep, same as alot of things, violent video games, alcohol etc. Retarded imo, they just look for the quick fix and don't adress the real issue.

  • Germany, you bunch of pussies. :-/

Why don't you look at the educational system before getting anal and banning things Third Reich style?

  • i read the 1st few posts and is everybody missing the fact that if guns were banned that would give full power to the black market gun trade also the society is very easily and without fear under full control of the government? guns are almost as important as freedom of expression when it comes to freedom.
