James Joyce children's book sparks feud

  • James Joyce children's book sparks feud

    BBC

A children's story by James Joyce has been published for the first time by a small press in Dublin.

However the Zurich James Joyce Foundation has called its publication an "outrage", saying it had not granted permission for the book's release....

"Is it really only bona fide scholars who have the right to see, interpret, adapt, and publish from works in these archives?" she told the BBC.

"And who exactly qualifies as a 'bona fide' scholar?"

  • Don't even get me started on the subject of copyright...

It's like saying: "I'm the copyright holder, and you must not publish this, I own this and I can sue you, because I have a headache and you must obey!"
To pinpoint just one more example, there's a great Romanian Surrealist poet and painter (won't mention name, but you can guess if you look at the Romanian Surrealist group and see who died in 1994), whose writings can't be reissued simply because of a grumpy relative from New York!
I must wonder how many years will take and how many writers, artists, musicians will still have to be double-crossed by copyright holders so that things will be changed?...

Can music be a cash cow? Definitely. But music can be much more than that! And sometimes I wish the people next to me could know at least as much as I do...

Copyright quite often protects those people too though.
