HMS Dauntless destroyer deployed to Falklands by navy

  • HMS Dauntless destroyer deployed to Falklands by navy

There's a notable a step-up in these 'regular deployments' of ships, aircraft and the Prince flying in...

    BBC

HMS Dauntless is to be deployed off the coast of the Falklands Islands in the South Atlantic, the Royal Navy has confirmed.

The Portsmouth-based ship will be the first of the navy's new Type 45 air defence destroyers to go to the area.

The Ministry of Defence said it was a routine deployment and HMS Dauntless would replace a frigate currently stationed there.

Given the high-profile assignment, it's not really a surprise that one of the most advanced ships in the navy is being deployed to the region.

  • So is anything actually going on? Is the next Crass going to come out of this? :)

The Argentines have wanted it back since they lost the Falklands war. There have been rumours relatively recently of small- scale things happening or things being said that would suggest some of them are prepared to make a move for it. Whether those are true or not, I'm a dubious. But we'll see.

    *Bit dubious.

  • Argentina don't have the military capability to take back the Falklands, they have decreasing army funding ever since the end of the Junta. If they did use force to take it back UN law is on our side. Although Argentina might be able to use the anti-British, anti-colonial sentiment to their advantage, Even though they are the colonial ones.

Anyway the Argentine president is fanning the flames on the Falklands, just to stir up nationalist feelings the country to distract people from Argentinas economic problems.

Well that would be nice... and well worth a little war.

  • It's all posturing and bluff.

The Argentine's invaded at a time when the defence was weak, the won't attempt it now.

They have got all their South America partners like Brazil on their side and any ship with a Falklands flag is denied entry to ports. they'll try blockade and economic strangulation before anything more physically threatening.

I love the Tory's renaissance with the Falklands, calling the Argentinians colonial =P

  • We originally took them from the French about the same time Colonel Travis, Davey Crockett and Jim Bowie were defending the Alamo.

What next, give the Channel Islands to France, just because Jersey is about ten miles away from their coast?

Just to emphasise how much it is indeed just posturing:
They have got all their South America partners like Brazil on their side and any ship with a Falklands flag is denied entry to ports. This is approximately zero ships, since they can arbitrarily change to the standard red ensign anyway. If they were even registered in the Falklands in the first place.

That's true. They could try blockades and stop aircraft flying from the Falklands to the mainland which could cause other problems.

But for now, they are content in stirring up their support in South America for negotiations in the future (probably at the UN, and after this Jubilee/Olympic year for the UK.

  • The best bit is Argentina calling us out for 'militarizing' the South Atlantic, and going on about wanting to find 'peaceful alternatives', given that we gave them the opportunity for peaceful alternatives several times (they declined our offer to have the International Court of Justice mediate the dispute three times), and that it's they that have resorted to military action in the near past.

Most absurd government (and to a large extent, population).

Do they even know who the conquistadors were?

Still. They were arguably in a far better position to take us on militarily the first time around, even if we currently 'z0mg, don't has operational aircraft carrier!1122'.

The best part is that Argentine's love to boast (allegedly of course) about how they are whitest South American country, therefore they are superior to all others.

This guy is a big, big embarrassment. I wouldn't be surprised if he sailed out there with his entourage and camera crew and claimed the land in the name of Argentina.

Sean Penn should return his Malibu estate to the Mexicans

By Tim Stanley US politics Last updated: February 15th, 2012

I’d like to make a statement about the growing crisis in the Americas. It’s time for justice. It’s time for liberty. It’s time to end the ludicrous and archaic commitment to colonialist ideology. It’s time Sean Penn handed his Malibu estate back to the Mexicans.
