Sorting/naming of different versions of song titles

This idea was inspired somewhat by another music catalogue site, rateyourmusic.com. On that site, all individual releases of an album (for example, a 1989 vinyl pressing, a 1990 CD pressing, 1992 CD pressing etc) are listed under that album's heading (eg. Abbey Road).

I saw on this site that albums such as The Velvet Underground and Nico are tagged completely wrong - every song on that album is tagged like so: "Sunday Morning (Album Version (Stereo))". Another example is the self-titled VU album, which has titles like "Pale Blue Eyes (Closet Mix)".

Under the rateyourmusic style of organising, last fm should allow users to make song titles 'children' of songs. So the song heading "Sunday Morning" would be the parent to all different versions of the song, not only the regular title but the "Album Version", "Mono", "Stereo" versions etc. The parent "Sunday Morning" would include the total plays of all sub-releases as well. For dance music, I think this feature would also be useful in finding different mixes of the one song, which are pretty hard to keep track of at the best of times.

Users could do this by voting for a song to be merged.

Blame the copyright holder (usually the label) for making the mistake when they uploaded the material.

Expanding on this, each song from an individual album should be treated as unique. I have a few different versions of Perfect Day by Lou Reed, but they all show up as the same song in my library (even though one is performed by Antony Hegarty on The Raven album and is as far detached from the original as you can get).

Seems like a good idea.

What if an individual song could have it's own charts for albums and versions?

Like this?
Song Title has appeared on multiple albums, top albums are
Greatest Hits - 3 plays (Single Edit), 1 play (Live Version)
Album Title - 2
Live in Rio - 1 plays (Live Version)
Remixed and Ruined - 0 Plays (Destroyed Version)
Album Unknown - negative 1 Plays

I like it rkfs. Seems like it would take only a minor programming change to achieve, so hopefully a staff member comes across the ideas in this thread.
