Sure it's possible. There's this thing called email... :P

  • It's really disappointing this feature's been "Coming Soon" for over a year at least now. Every other social networking site out there has this feature as standard yet this site (which was bought for close to $300 million if I remember correctly?) can't do it. Here's hoping we see the feature soon.

  • BRING IT BACK! We've waited too long...

  • as a subscriber, i feel disrespected. this is ridiculous how something as simple as a contact importer is not present. I WILL NOT be renewing my subscription with Last.fm again.

every month i come back and check, and month after month, will it soon by years? the feature is not there. i remember reading staff saying there was no ETA on this feature, so i am unsure why i am still hoping. maybe something like "surely, they will realise that not having it will make them less competitive" but no.

  • +1

This waiting drives me mad.. It's ridiculous...

  • Come on !

  • Sounds true:
too many sorrys. too little work. apparently.

  • not trying to create a revolution here but ...

maybe we could either move to another site (what's the best alternative out there?) or add pressure to last.fm staff so they would bring "find friends" back

  • also, does someone know how last.fm stores its data?
would it somehow be possible to download listening history and transfer it to some other site

if you have used last.fm (or some other service) for a while you are somewhat sticked to it. unless willing to discard listening history, profile etc you can't change the service.
thinking about it now i can see that the data must be freely transferable in the future. just like mobile numbers became freely transferable between carriers, personal data will do the same

How they store the data is irrelevant, because they're not going to give you direct access to the database (that would be insane). It may be possible to slurp down all of your account data via the API, though.

  • You can't pull your entire listening history, as far as I know. But it's a totally irrelevant point, because (correct me if I'm wrong) there's no services that let you import any data.

Besides, I'm still pretty much convinced that Last.fm is the best out there. I'm going nowhere, even if it is a real shame this feature still isn't back.

  • Still waiting....

  • its about time.

  • gwalla, alexmuller,
thanks for the reply. i agree that direct access is insane; that currently no other service accepts data (as no data is available) and; that last.fm is the best one out there. stats, radio etc are working quite well but social features are missing. friend finder is just one thing among many. last.fm could have better integration with social networks (facebook, orkut)

as last.fm is privately held company, i don't know their exact performance figures. but i think that they are missing out on some oppurtunities. when speaking about friend finder, linkedin got (and probably still is) 90% of their new members through e-mail invites from other members. friend finder / inviter + better integration with social networks could do wonders here.

also last.fm lacks proper desktop app. i am doing manual reset to the scrobbler at least once a week - somehow it stops syncing my listening history. their new online radio looks quite nice but nothing for desktop or symbian. i am not using iphone so i can't comment that. but services like spotify are taking their part of the pie and last.fm is clearly the loosing side here.

    gwalla,
i thought about the API also.

i'll rest my case here. in general i am happy with last.fm but just can't believe that "coming soon" equals 10+ months for them. substandard, just like politics in my native country estonia :)
would like to know what is causing this holdup

Lolol, I am very aware there is a thing called email. However, from my experience (with my friends at least) if I send them an email directly saying "you should sign up to last.fm!" they simply won't, mainly because people really don't want to take the time to sign up on sites and install software from them. BUT, if I send them some generated email inviting them to last.fm, an official last.fm email, through last.fm, they are ALOT more likely to sign up.

That's just the way most people work, and that's why a contact importer or invite option is crucial on this site.

I've read last.fm staff say the feature is not available yet because it wasn't very good when it was available so they are making it alot better. I understand that, but I just can't understand why they had to completely take it away. They could leave the old contact importer working until they actually had a new better one to exchange it with. Even if they say the old contact importer wasn't good, it was way way way better than nothing.

  • juhanharm, you'll appreciate this so much. It's a forum post from the Last.fm CTO stating that data exporting features are coming soon. That said, 'friend finding' has been "coming soon" too... :p

Likewise for re-importing user recommendations from before the site switch. "Soon" for Recommended Reading was about a year (and counting, technically, since it's still at a pre-official-release stage). Last.FM may be on the Internet but it doesn't seem to run on Internet time.

    bring it backkkkkkkkkkkk

  • Is anyone even working on this? This is a pretty basic feature to ignore, especially considering that one of Last.fm's biggest advantages over services like Pandora is the social aspect.

  • Don't bring it back.

While that is not technically a breach of netiquette, it is definitely not cricket.
