The reason for the new awkward layout with loads of blank space:

    http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/tech_and_web/article4350427.ece

It was created for ad placement, so no one even cares if you guys like it or not, it's here to stay...

  • I never go into these forums, but I want to chime in on this issue...

I don't like the overall look of the layout, but I can certainly get used to it--even the Comment Wall (it's no longer a shoutbox). What is making me angry about this new layout is it's constantly crashing my browser. I'm honestly surprised that I could even manage to get to this page. There is some type of script error that appears that NEVER happened with the old layout. I'm not sure what's causing it, but I sure hope it's fixed.

    Like it!

I really like the new lay-out, good work! I really have a feeling that everything is closer now, like the playlist, your charts in time and recent activity, I also like the customizable library!

I mean, it does have a logical build-up. All about your music is in the middle of the page, your personal interests / activities are on the right and you can find more information on the left if you don't have enough.

I DO agree that it would be better to have 25 top artists / songs instead of 15.

But as I said, I love it and I already got used to it. Great work! :)

  • That one in photobucket is awesome! It mixes the best features of the old and new version! the last fm team should pay attention to this!

umm.. Thanks for the effort from those who put the time in. But to rephrase what everyone else has said. last.fm has taken a unique user interface and totally blended itself into the endless cycle of other social networks.
Last.fm was based on connecting with people through music. Now you have to scroll down to view a persons musical taste.
The people I know that use last.fm use it as an alternative to other social networking sites that are based on artificial and unecessary communication. Music is universal.. With this new design, last.fm has become a clone of that artificial world.
no new features have been added except for the horrible stalker panel. I feel that the design/programming team has fallen out of touch with its user base. last.fm users a little more mature than your average internet social networker.

    ATTENTION ALL FIREFOX USERS.

I managed to get my Last.fm page looking like this using only a couple of scripts via Greasemonkey:

    http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/2084/ant17smusicprofileusersnp1.jpg

Simply go here to install the Greasemonkey application for Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748

And go here to look for and install the scripts: http://userscripts.org/scripts/search?q=last.fm

And a as a quickie, here's a repost of the 'Paint It Black' theme for the new design: http://userstyles.org/styles/8671

won't heal my heart, but at least my eyes!!!
    thx

  • I tottaly agree with elmoro7.It's not that it is only slow, the interface is one of those "beautiful" designs that you are not able to find what you want to see right away.Where is the big taste-o-meter and why my shoutbox is down there?I want to see it when I open my profile, and why there is not even an option which design to use?

  • Ehm okay in short, being a designer myself. And yes i know change comes with getting used to it.. but this.. seriously?

    1. Shoutbox UP! It's a shout(!)box, not a damn comments feature.
    2. Where the hell is the Users tab?
    3. Why the 'broken' header? Had some old Photoshop brushes laying around hm?
    4. More contrast with the background please.
    5. More compact please, my eyes are flying all over the place.
6... Ah nevermind nobody will use this feedback anyway.

One of the few good things:

Tabbed timeframe in Top [..] part.

Oh and, don't even get me started on the 'improved' logo...

edit; Actually, that looks a bit like Lost.fm, which actually fits the site quite good now.

edit2; I'm mainly talking lay-out/interface here, there are some really improved features.

  • I don't get all the complaining...

I like the new look! I don't understand why people say it's like being "back in the '90s", it makes no sense, the graphics are so modern and fresh!
I do agree that maybe the way in which the various boxes are arranged could use some improvement, especially the shoutbox, which just doesn't belong there and should be put on the side and take up much less space (making the site look more balanced and less "vertical").
But, as far as I'm concerned, I love everything else about the layout! (Of course I'm anxiously waiting for the "Paint It Black" feature :D)...

As for the features, I just LOVE the new features! I love how you can customize your charts choosing what to display, I love the fact that it doesn't take days to update the charts anymore (it's all in real-time), I love that you can listen to previews of basically any song, I love how much more evident your personal player is, etc...

You made all in all a good job there, I appreciate it! ;)

  • This new layout is simply horrible. There is really no option to switch it to the previous normal one?

Holy shit. I thought this was just 911ers making conspiracy theories up. It turns out it's true?

  • I miss my old last.fm =(

It was so much quicker, efficient and simple. I don't need it to be fancy with all kinds of flashy, big "stuff" all over the place. That's what facebook, myspace, and livejournal are for. I know that some people like the new interface a lot and that's fine for them, but I think the option to have the classic layout would be great.

The old site was like an ocean of calm, I often went there just to zone out because of its soothing simplicity. The new site has changed all that.

This was my mind when visiting the old site: "Aaaaaaah. Oooooooh. Mmmmmmm". This is my mind when visiting the new site: "AH! AAAAAH! NOOOOO! DOOOON'T! PLEEEAAASE! I BEG YOU! NNNNGH". The old site was something i visited out of impulse, knowing that I'd have a good time there. I still have that impulse to just visit, but that's because I'm still associating Last.FM with that old site. Very soon that will change and I'll stop my visits altogether.*

I'm not someone who wrinkles his nose at change, in fact, I welcome it wholeheartedly. But as with all change, it is CRITICAL that you PAY ATTENTION to the feedback. Feedback tells you if you're on the right track or not. I have a rule of thumb to try something consequently to see if any initial hiccups are due to lack of tries. And I know it's only been a day with this site, but it continues to give me nothing at all. The calm feeling I had with the old site is replaced with the thought "Why am I even here?" every time I go to my personal page.

I like to talk about my feelings more than pointing out the practical things that could be changed. I'm funny like that.

*This might read as an empty threat, but given the vast number of sites on the HOLY INTERWEB, I doubt that I, or any other disgruntled user, will have any trouble finding a replacement for this.

P.S: I feel like I'm wasting time when I'm at the new sites. Usually that's something that comes AFTER spending time on the internet. Not a feeling you want during your time-wasting.

I was impressed that nothing much changed when last.fm was sold... I guess it was all being saved up for this 're-launch'.

on their blog they were like 'we had to close the comments because of so many comments, huzzah etc. please keep giving us feedback!'
the happiness conveyed in that message shows the fact they havent even read the comments. if they had they'd realise 9/10 comments are from angered last fm users such as myself who consider this new move a corporate sell out

Firefox ad-block causes it to crash

If you have the ad-block add-on for Firefox enabled, the music player just doesn't appear. No warning messages, there's just a blank white space where the player should be.

CBS clearly don't like the idea of people using the site and blocking adverts.

    Terrible, absolutely terrible.

Bang goes another nice website, time to find a new music site.

    LOLPWNED

  • I agree like the most of us...

Argh... I am very disappointed. Ok, always when a websites layout is changhed, there are people who don't like it. But sometimes it isn't just whining. Sometimes it is for a reason...

    Like now.

I agree to many many many things that people have said here.

Why is the shoutbox down there where I can't see it emmidiately? Just like someone said: The shoutbox is for fast connecting. I want to see the shoutbox when I first open the last.fm profile. I also liked it when I saw my Friends right there almost the first thing when I entered the site.

Why is the neighbours section moved from the front page os my profile? It was the most interesting thing and it was just perfect there where it was! Okay, it's over there in it's own section. Well, why couldn't it be on the front?

Why is there a huge weird player on the front taking most of the space? I have never used such a thing if there was such in past. Could I even please have a button where I could make it not visible? Cause I don't need it. It takes too space being a player I'll never use. And what is the 'Library'? Are you trying to make me listen to my music via last.fm? Sorry but I use Winamp and that's enough... If that was your intention?

Why does my last played list have to take so much space? It was very compact in the old version.

Why couldn't the about me section stay under my icon. Just like someone mentioned - it is just resionable to show these thing next to the icon cause a lot of people have their icons made of their own photos. So It's a part of their 'about me' section.

Why Is everything so wide and empty? And yet still I've got hundreds of pixels on the sides with nothing on them? And then shoutbox is pushed to the very end of the page and neighbours did not fit in anymore cause that bundle of empty space on the sides was so damn needed...

Why is there a 'recent activity' section? Could I get a button where I could make it not visible? Cause I don't need it. It just takes away the space that could have been used to the Shoutbox and/or Neighbours....

Why does the musical compatibility have to be so wide? It was quite nice and compact to begin with. Okay this is a thing that I am going to be okay with in time but it's just one of the many things that are made way too wide and that take way too much place in the site.

There is yet one nice thing I find!

Thanks for the option to search users! If there was such before it was somehow hidden cause it was very hard for me to find a way to see my friends profile before he was in my friends list. Thanks!

Yet... One good thing... Is it enough?

I bet that I'll get used to this, even how annoying it is. But I must admit. If I now found a website that was a lot like the older version of last.fm, I might well leave here and go there. Just for the sake of not 'getting used to user-unfriendly sites'.

It also might be that these thing will work in the future and we don't have to manage with the bad things.

PS: Sorry if my English is crappy...
