    Quoth?

I'm sorry if this has been pointed out already, but why does quoting someone's post result in "Quoth [username]:"? "Quoth"? Don't you guys mean "quote"? Is this some wacky alternate spelling or did you guys just mess up, decide it's too much of a bother to fix, and now you're hoping no one will notice? ;P

lol yea, It's been mentioned before :)

I dont know....I personally never heard of the word "quoth" used before, but looking at google, there are quite a few results :)

Including the second result, being the American Heritage(R) Dictionary of the English Language:
TRANSITIVE VERB: Archaic Uttered; said. Used only in the first and third persons, with the subject following: “Quoth the Raven, ‘Nevermore!’” (Edgar Allan Poe).
ETYMOLOGY: Middle English, from Old English cwth, third person sing. past tense of cwethan, to say. See gwet- in Appendix I.

Or, they just want a running count of people who notice, question, or attempt to correct their use of the word? hehe.

I think that explanation is entirely quite likely.

    Your favorite band sucks!
  • That is the explanation. I remembered it was something with quoth and raven :)

Intentional. But you can fix it, if you feel like it. Or create your custom quote messages. :)

I really didn't expect that so many English-speaking people didn't know this word. Even I know it, although I'm Austrian and I was never anywhere near Britain or the US. *gg*

And I always thought that "The Raven" was read in your schools, as it is a classic piece of literature, or isn't it?

Well, I'd heard of it, but I never read it in school...

I think, to be honest, kids are becoming less interested in classic literature such as that (well, around here anyway...)

I had to memorize it in the 8th grade. Every now and then, it'll get stuck in my head, all these years later.
