"Recommended NEW!" vs. "Recommendations"

  • Ok, my brother (GTStar) was just able to confirm this problem for me.

He accessed internet using a completely different provider, Windows XP as his OS and IE-based CrazyBrowser.

He got the old link directly after logging in and after about 15 reloads he got it again, as expected.

It's not anything to do with us. Something is wrong with some peoples' ISPs it seems.

I've just checked this issue on my notebook. This bug happens there, too. Additionally I've checked it with a help-account I created just recently. And it happens with this account, too.
I'm going to visit my parents for christmas and surely going to check it there on every computer, I manage to find. *gg*

@Interneci: What's your ISP? Mine is Arcor.

@Russ: Since the old code had been replaced, is it the same for the code, that generates/-ed the old User-Recommendations-page itself (http://www.last.fm/inbox/recommendations.php)? I can't find a link for this page over the new pony so it may rather be deleted on your server, but the page loads properly, even containing information, that was added after the pony-upgrade; at least that wouldn't be applicable to a proxying-problem (supposing it's deleted on the server, of course)..

Hehe, indeed that would be intense. :)
But rather unlikely, since Interneci and me are living in Germany and the servers are situated in the UK, I suppose. No big conspiracy, it seems. ;-(
Well... at least for your government, TheIronyCafe :-o

    happens to me too.

well, at least it did happen to me a lot. Haven't checked it recently. I'd also like to see a link to the old system - these two are so wildly different that they can be used for different things. The new system is really cool and all that, but it only tracks your last weeks tracks - which may or may not be such a great idea.

so if the old code still exists, why not let users access it.

The new system completely subsumes the old one, afaics. But I'm not sure, if I get your point right.

At least this issue isn't limited to Germans or German ISPs, (un)fortunately.

[EDIT] Ah, how could I have overlooked that: The old link sais Recommendations (5) for me. But these five recommendations are all dated 05/12/05, after the pony-upgrade and therefore the deletion of the code. No proxy-caching problem, it seems. At least, if there's no weird thing as a code-executing-proxy (load-balancing? *twinkle at interneci*) along the line.

(Firefox 1.5, although I don't think it makes a difference)

Mh, Russ, I really don't see how this could be caused by ISPs? It's not as if oudated pages would be delivered, the rest of the page's content IS definitely current, it just contains this old link.

    Quoth ppcharon:
@Interneci: What's your ISP? Mine is Arcor.

Mine is WESTEND (http://www.westend.com/) and my brother reproduced it with T-Online (http://www.t-online.de/) using a different user account.

I also just reproduced it using my university's network (http://www.rwth-aachen.de/) to access last.fm.

    I honestly wonder

    a) with which ISP it does NOT happen and
    b) how it would be technically possible to be caused by an ISP, as the pages delivered itself *are* current, they only contain the old link?

    Quoth Schrollum:

According to the last.fm staff it's not supposed to be this way. It'd also be strange if it was intended, as the link changes between "Recommendations" and "Recommended NEW" more or less randomly, only very seldom displaying "Recommendations".

See this Screenshot for an example, showing the top of this discussion page featuring the old "Recommendations"-link.

OK, I agree, it looks like something on our end, but the odd thing is that nobody in the office has ever seen this issue... Next time it happens, view source for the page - near the bottom should be a line which looks like this:

    <!-- Generated by www2 on Sun, 18 Dec 2005 13:59:20 +0000 -->

Maybe we can see if one of our servers is playing up.

  • Ok, did you change anything? 'cause I don't seem to be able to reproduce the problem any more since your post, while it was rather easy before as you can see in my screenshot.

If you didn't change anything it just may be the demo effect / Murphy's law, so I'll continue to keep an eye on it...

OK, maybe it got accidentally fixed by something I did, but I haven't a clue what...

  • Hehe, ok... :-)
Well, it really seems to be fixed.
Maybe some of your staff ran an "svn up" on a forgotten server? ;)

On a side note: Would it be possible to remove the "NEW" tag, if I've checked my recommendations? So, basically, it would only show "New" when there are new recommendations that I haven't viewed yet, similar to the way the Inbox/Messages would work, showing (1) Unread message, or wahtever :)
