"Recommended NEW!" vs. "Recommendations"

  • "Recommended NEW!" vs. "Recommendations"

My, if logged in the third link in the upper right corner's info box continuosly alternates between saying "Recommendations" (leading to the old recommendations pages) and "Recommended NEW!" (which let's me ride my Pony).

I couldn't figure out what's displayed when, sometimes it just suddenly changes the the other link while surfing the page, and then it suddenly changes back... Is this a bug , or is it intended?

  • No, caching issues are definitely not the cause. As the pages are dynamically generated, Konqueror won't cache them anyway.

A reload will most likely cause "Recommendations" be replaced by "Recommended NEW!", but visiting the same page at a later time may display "Recommendations" again - while the rest of the page is definitely up-to-date.

OTH a forced reload will only likely - but not always! - let "Recommendations" disappear, so there's something fishy going on there...

  • I just verified it by reloading the forum index page a few times, the link continuously changes between "Recommended NEW!" and "Recommendations" in an inpredictable way.

Looks like a bug to me.

We've never seen this, which makes it seem like it's a browser issue. It does seem odd though.

It's the same for me: When (hard) reloading my profile's page very roughtly every 6th reload the "old" link appears. Until now I've never seen the old link appearing two times in a row though.

    I'm using IE6.

  • Hmm, chances are it's a browser problem, I mean, IE?! :P

I've never had this problem at all, and have never cleared the cache for Firefox either heh.

    Interneci uses Konqueror. *shrug* ;)

  • Yes, you you use IE...

Mh, I cannot see how this even could be a browser issue... I just verified using Fireforx 1.0.7, though, and it happens there as well.

So it's at least a problem with Konqueror, InternetExplorer and Firefox.

So, you mean I should rather ignore this problem since I'm using IE?
Well, I just wanted to point out, that the problem Interneci described isn't limited to one browser.

Perhaps it's our IPS to blame.

Maybe it's to do with some crappy caching proxy your ISP uses?
The website isn't outputing "Recommendations" as far as i can see.. we simply changed the code to "Recommended NEW"

    Information wants to be beer.
  • I've not seen this problem at all using FF 1.5 and the previous version.

Unlikely, the following is just copy'n'pasted directly from this forum page with your answer on it:

    ------------------
    Interneci
    Messages
    Recommendations
    ------------------

This time it took only one reload for the "Recommended NEW!" to be replaced by the old text and link. As this text and link actually is part of the pages HTML source code AFAICS, this definitely cannot be a caching or proxying issue.
It's no old page which is being displayed.
I'm also not using any web proxy.

  • Now it displays "Recommended NEW!" again. I'll check how many reloads it takes for Recommendations to re-appear...

"When all else fails, read the instructions." -- Cahn's Axiom
  • Ok, this time it took seven reloads after the submit for the "Recommendations"-link to show up again. Also this page is current with both of my previous posts just displaing above this textarea.

  • Well if the physical code itself has been changed to Reccommendations New! then it's obvious that there's some caching error somewhere along the line...

  • Maybe, but it's not on my side. This link and it's containing box is a part of this page, so if parts of an otherwise current page are dated, it happens before the page is assembled and served.
It could well be caching issue on the server side or might have something to do with a server-side load balancing system, I don't know last.fm's infrastructure. Maybe something there needs to be fixed, but it's a few days ago the Pony came alive and server-side cached content should have vanished in the meantime.

Additionally I co-maintain some heavily scripted web sites as well and know exactly how easy it is to overlook something. Maybe this link was not only contained in a single script and thus has not been changed everywhere, or one of the used server has stale content it delivers, I don't know...

But surely it'd happen to everyone if it was a server issue? It's never happened to me...

    That's what I was thinking.

  • I'm pretty sure it happens to everyone. Just watch it a bit closer the next time, when I just checked I had to reload thirteen times but then the old link re-appeared.
Maybe someone else beside me, ppcharon and ElBarto86 (see the linked thread) can confirm this problem?

That, and refreshing the same page wouldn't cause it to change...

Actually, I'm pretty sure it's never happened to me, no matter how much I want to reload any page...

  • Re: Re: Re:

Quoth mustaqila:That, and refreshing the same page wouldn't cause it to change...

If load balancing is in place this depends entirely on its configuration.

Ok, I just got the same behaviour using the text mode browser "elinks" on a text console - believe me, I never ever used elinks before to access last.fm.

I then retried using Konqueror but accessing the site using SSL to rule out any possibly stalking transparent proxy I'm not aware of - SSL-connections cannot be proxied - and also got the same behaviour.

Maybe it's coupled to specific user accounts?

"When all else fails, read the instructions." -- Cahn's Axiom
  • Well, I tried reloading roughly 20 times and I didn't ever get the old link. I'll keep my eyes peeled for it, though. Maybe it's just some wonky thing a few users have.
