New auto-corrections imported

I swapped around my [original language] and [romanized] tag fields for title/artist etcHow did you do that?

Before I had romanized titles in the "title" and "artist" tag fields, and the original language in a custom ID3 field I named for my own use.

Now, I've discovered a better solution:
I have the original language in title and artist, whereas the romanized titles (Surname last) are in %TitleSortOrder% and %PerformerSortOrder%. These "sort" fields are iTunes/ID3v2.4 tags, and iTunes will alphabetize your Unicode artists the way you set them as romanized which is pretty nifty. However, to write them you either need to use iTunes (lol no) or mp3tag (http://mp3tag.de/).

The other nice thing about mp3tag is that you can build scripts to mass/batch edit your tracks. One such script would be to swap fields, which I did.

foobar2000 0.9.6.2 which I use to listen on my PC currently doesn't read Sort fields but the next release should as I brought it up on their IRC channel and was given an intermediate build of "foo_input_std.dll", the plugin that controls default supported file formats. If you also use foobar I could send you the plugin (but it also has a glitch, it doesn't read the "Album Artst" (%band%) field if you use sort tags).

i don't see the green stars anymore, and mistitled/misattributed tracks seem to have reverted to their former state. i have auto-correction on. what am i missing?

U.G.L.Y. - changing the face of music, one artist at a time.
there are some things pngs can't fix. for everything else, there's pngoptimizer.
  • For next update:

Emiliana Torrini (wrong spelling) should be merged to Emilíana Torrini (right one).

Visit Musicbrainz and her official page in order to check the right ID3 tags.

You say the name of an artist should be written the way the artist intended.
Well, for most Japanese artists, Last.fm is doing quite the contrary.
For instance: Ayumi Hamasaki. Her name is spelt that way on every single thing she releases but nevertheless Last.fm has decided that it was 浜崎あゆみ which was the right one.

This is just one example, just to underscore the absurdity of this reasoning.

Even with the new auto-correction turned off, automatic changes are now being made again.

Afro Celt Sound System (the correct name) now maps to Afro Celts just like it did a good while ago. As the note on the MusicBrainz page for the Afro Celt Sound System says, they only used the name Afro Celts for one of their five main studio albums. See the Wikipedia page and MB page...

(And surely we need a better term than "wrong auto-corrections" which just doesn't make sense.)

  • Can someone tell me roughly how long after voting these changes come into effect (if that's the way we have to do it)?

A lot of the very commercial pop stuff from the 80's and 90's that I listen to has very few listeners amongst the Coldplay and Radiohead massive on Last.FM, so I fear that my trying to help out by actively voting might be a bit futile.

As well as a timeline, how many "votes" (bleurgh!) does it take to get the titles and artist names changed over?

(P.S. I would still think it better if someone bought themselves a copy of the Guinness Book Of British Hit Singles and used it for Last.FM's databases. Pay me the minimum wage and I'll do it...)

thank you. it hasn't changed yet. will give it time.

  • I'm not sure if I'm also right here, but anyway once again I'll say what's my problem with the auto-corect:)
First I want to say that's the idea with Auto-Correct is great, but it's a shame that there are some misstakes. For example I have the originall Matrix Soundtracks. And on this soundtracks there are tracks by "Don Davis" (the composer) but there are also some tracks by them the composer works with the group Juno Reactor. And the artist for this tracks called "Juno Reactor vs. Don Davis" and "Juno Reactor & Don Davis". But the nwe program changes all traks by "Juno Reactor & Don Davis" eventually in tracks by "Juno Reactor" or "Don Davis" or "Juno Reactor vs. Don Davis". For the Autocorect "Juno Reactor & Don Davis" don't exist! Maybe the proble is that it should that "and" and not that "&". I don't know? I had already feedback this tracks, but I think the only thing that I can do is to wait.
So the only thing that could be done is to feedback the right tittle, artist? But that can take quite long:(
    I'm sorry for my english:)

Oh, I see you're talking about something outside last.fm - I thought you were saying you'd done it within the system. I liked the idea of mp3tag but found I didn't get on with it, so I use other applications now.

This is just going to lead to an endless argument.

    1) A majority of Japanese releases, I'd say, have romanized artist name on the cover of the album. Most even do surname last, unlike the vast majority of Last.fm users.
    a) these same albums usually have the Japanese artists written on both the side of the case and inside the booklet.

Generally what's written in the booklet is considered fact, unless I'm mistaken. So while a release may have both a romanized name and the original Japanese name, I'd have to reason the Japanese name is "more" official regardless of what's on the cover.

I've noticed that some artists have become split again....

Beatles & The Beatles and Eagles & The Eagles

It should be The Beatles and Eagles (confirmed by looking at respective official websites)

A perfect example of how flawed the current system with user votes is. There's just too many people with erroneous tags who trust their (downloaded) material to be correct and will vote against any change, even presented with a plethora of evidence they're wrong.
A system based on MusicBrainz + moderation where needed would be far better. Sure it'd be more work in the start but over time less and less moderation will be needeed as most of the data is correct.

Sorry but MusicBrainz is not a better option; in fact I'd say it's worse than user votes. They don't have any anime artists correct in their database; on the other hand many users have the actual discs/booklets to prove MB is wrong.

But this system is based on votes, musicbrainz and fingerprints ( i assume ). so basically what you asked for.

Too may artists have been split up...worse, some people just uploaded tracks on split artists...stats are so incorrect and will continue to be incorrect. Can't these artists simply be merged?

i didn't really trust the auto-correction after it was introduced, but after the new set of auto-corrections i can only say one thing...

    guys... You Rock My World

all the misspelled and weird artist that were present in my library (after turning the option on) are now gone!
    a very good job indeed...

So get them fixed at MusicBrainz? It's really not that much work if you have any sort of verifiable proof.

Considering the incorrect redirections and artist names here, user votes apparently hold way too much sway. MusicBrainz eliminates those who just vote without actually checking their facts, something too many unfortunately do.

Why did you do that? it was perfectly fine, now it is all screwed up! Tool – Aenema was first corrected as Ænema, which is OK . now you corrected it as Aenima (see the letter change of letter e -> i which is wrong?). Had to turned it of. Hope you were drunk when you did this.

Sorry but you have no idea how much work it would actually be. Seeing as how creating an artist and a single took way too much work, I can't imagine what redirecting 500+ songs on MBID would become.

  • For a while I noticed that Nine Inch Иails had autocorrected to the correct Nine Inch Nails but now it appears to have reverted back. Is there any way to change this?

    Again,
Nine Inch Иails ---> Nine Inch Nails

    Thank you,
    Matt
