    my recommended events

Has stopped listing stuff based on my listening habits and instead is only listing things in my city (which is really annoying as most of what i like doesn't play here!).

Anyone got any idea for why this incredibly stupid and annoying that might have happened? And if i can amend it?

Since the main thing i tell people about last.fm is that i don't miss gigs because of it, and now it's not doing what i love anymore!

    Hey there,

We recently rolled out an upgrade to our event recommendations system, which is why they might have changed for you recently.

Out of curiosity, though -- why are you interested in seeing recommendations for gigs that aren't near you? I'm not sure I understand your problem fully yet.

Actuall, I've got to say that the event recs have gotten far better. The 'main' events page used to show me events in London, for some reason (my location was set to Liverpool, and recommendations were from Liverpool, but last.fm/events only showed London gigs). The ones on my actual recommendations page were at least from the right city, but only showed about 6 events (and none which I was actually interested in, a bunch of bands I used to like but not so much any more).

Now I've got two pages of event recs - perhaps too many, there are a bunch which don't interest me and I don't know why I'm being recommended them. But that's far better than the old list which didn't show any of the good events.

this might or not be related but my event recommendations is giving me results for brooklyn, new york which is about 4 hours away from where i am now (in binghamton, ny) It doesn't give me results for manhattan or other areas that are in between the 2 so i think this may be a bug. It's been doing this for a while. thanks

Some of the stuff I listen to is so obscure that I am willing to travel for 4 or 5 hours (one way) to see it, while in other cases the venue across the street is far enough.
Last.fm will have a very hard time deciding what artist will fit in what category, I think ;)

Remember to say "thank you" for the things you haven't had

So what exactly did you guys change in the how the recommended events are chosen? Because I've suddenly got a whole bunch of bands listed that I've never heard of before.

We've put a new event recs system online that tries to be a bit more broad in its recommendations to help out users who don't have big profiles. It will sometimes recommend events with artists you haven't heard of but still thinks you might like, if it thinks it can't find anything else.

It may still need some tweaks for people on the other end of the spectrum (it may be recommending too much stuff you haven't heard of) - I'll be making some updates over the next few days, specifically comparing results for some of you guys who complained :)

    Thanks for the reply,

As stated above a lot of what i listen to doesn't come anywhere near where i live, sadly southampton isn't a hot bed of jazz, world or experimental music and so i regularly travel to London or Brighton to watch artists (i'm off to Seu Jorge this week).

The best thing about Last.Fm, for me, was the gig recommendations based on my listening habits (rather than location). I previously had mine set at within 100 miles of me to cover the stuff i'd otherwise miss.

I can honestly say that i've lost track of the amount of times i've sold last.fm to people on the basis of this, since the recommendations music wise don't come close to throwing up things i haven't heard of.

Presumably this is a simple fix too since it's all stored in the db and would just be a simple sql query?

my calendar, which synchs with my recommended events, is suddenly full of events with many artist that I REALLY do NOT like

the old recommendation did work a lot better for me

I looked for the "why is this event being recommended for me?" link but could not find it anymore. there is really no reason for some of the recommend events to be in my list

"events by this artist near you"

I like how the new events page works, but something I'm still confused about is the "events by this artist near you" box of info that appears along with the other artist info in the default player.

I feel like often the events that show up here are not actually in my city, but instead are just the "upcoming events" this artist has in the next few days. It would be more valuable to me if this box showed only events within my city, even if they were months away.

for example, I am in Boston and I am listening to a song by Josh Ritter, and the event that shows up in the "Events by this Artist Near You" are a couple gigs in Dublin next month.

    am i missing something?

  • cew821: This is when you're listening to the radio on the site here, isn't it? These events are indeed not events near you at the moment, but upcoming events by the artist which could be anywhere. This should get fixed soon.

@foreverautumn: yes, this occurs when I'm listening to the radio on the site. Happy to hear this is getting fixed, it will be really cool to see when a band is coming to my city next without having to click to another page and search the whole list of shows for my city.

Events only in my city isn't very interesting for me. I don't miss events in my city even without Last.fm !

Event recs with a distance was one of my favorite features of Last.fm. And this feature is lost :(

    I second this.

Now I'm having to do "change location" to like Atlanta or Nashville to scan some of the larger cities near me. My hometown doesn't have much. :-/

Earlier, recommended events were the best way how to find out what's happening all around. And now there is a bunch of events in my hometown that I mostly get to know from friends or different sources, so that's why new system is useless for me.

I don't think that new system is useless for everybody here but it would be nice if it would be possible to set things up (distance, "sort" of recommended artists), so then it would be fine for everybody (maybe).

  • please please bring back the distance radius

I'd love to see events based on distance and tags or genres. This way I would know upcoming events on cities of all spain, based on the tags or genres i like.
Now i only see events on my city, not being importnt if I like them or not.

Sometimes less is more, I mean, why don't you relay on users the decission of what events to show in their profiles? I think it's less work for you, and it's better for the users.

For example, i'd like to see "ELECTROPOP", "INDIE POP" and "SYNTHPOP" upcoming events on "SPAIN".
This is exactly the information i need for planning all my weekends.

Apart of this, of course I love getting recommendations for other tags or artists from lastfm... but it's not the most important thing for me.

    Personal Events Feed

Not as good as the old Last.fm feature, but very useful anyway : http://www.lctm.entadsl.com/scripts/personaleventsfeed.php

  • i'm also having issues with my recommended events. i used to get recommendations for events of bands i listen to. about 5 pages or so, pretty much everything interesting for me was in it.
with the new system i have popular events near me, mostly in germany (i live in the netherlands near the german border) and mostly of bands i don't know or like. if i choose to see recommended events for me, i get only 1 page of shows. sometimes there is something interesting in there, but most of the time there's not. i'm pretty bummed out cause with the old system i could keep track of all cool shows in the netherlands and across the german border but now it seems i can only keep track of what other people think is cool.

please bring back the option to see all shows by bands i listen to near me!

  • I'll also throw in my vote for the old events system. Last.fm on my iCalendar used to be like a "MUST-DO" list. I would show it off at parties and brag about its awesome powers of keeping me aware of all my favorite bands.

Now, I see a ton of shows that I've never heard of, with no way to stop getting them recommended to me. Also, the recommendations are missing shows that I would have DIED if I missed. These are shows that are in my top 10 artists for the last 3 months , and that I have marked as "attending" but still do not show up in my recommendation calendar (Ratatat and Ra Ra Riot for instance)
