"various artists" - correct tags, do capital letters matter?

  • "various artists" - correct tags, do capital letters matter?

I searched the forums and haven't found my problem - sorry if it's there and I'm just making a mess...

I was browsing my charts and noticed that a few albums have "Various Artists" instead of the name of the artist or some weird titles (eg. "huH, Volume 9"). At first I thought I had incorrect tags, but I checked the first album by "Various Artists" in my charts ("Come Up For Air"), checked the tags - all of them are correct, though the band name is written in small letters (the white birch). Do capital letters matter? Or is this a temporary glitch?
And if I want to correct the tags, how am I supposed to know what "Various Artists – Romance at Sunset (The Nashville Symphony feat. conductor: Kenneth Schermerhorn)" is if I have NEVER listened to such track?... I hope I'm making myself clear :)

    Thanks in advance!

case errors in track/album/artist titles can be fixed. report here.

as for the 'Various Artists' issue, one thing they appear to have begun doing recently is to list the artists beside the tracks in affected albums for clarity sake, eg compilations, soundtracks, all-star tributes, etc.

on top of that, these said tracks have also been 'repatriated' to their respective artists' music directory, rather than the previous 'various artists' catch-all directory (one example). (this may not have been done yet for all cases, though.) so the 'various artists' thing will exist only as an ad hoc grouping, and not the nonexistent artist that it was.

when that's all done, kludgy titles like "Various Artists – Romance at Sunset (The Nashville Symphony feat. conductor: Kenneth Schermerhorn)", where the artist is appended to the title, will very likely give way to something tidier like the track "Romance at Sunset" attributed to "The Nashville Symphony feat. conductor: Kenneth Schermerhorn" but included in some album comprising said 'various artists'.

there's not much you can do presently about mistagged tracks streaming from last.fm, but you can help things along by ensuring the songs in your itunes music library that you scrobble have the correct id3 tags (you can check this at www.musicbrainz.org) so that your correct scrobbled data can be gathered by the servers and added to the last.fm database.

U.G.L.Y. tip #33⅓: alpha masks make your pngs blurry. strip 'em if you don't need 'em.
  • Thanks for your reply :) I've figured out the "Romance at Sunset" thing, but there's still a problem with my "Come Up For Air" album - it's not by "Various Artists" but by The White Birch (and there have never been any other artists on it :)), and my tags have always correctly said so :)
Hope it's just a matter of time :) Especially that the cover art for the album is OK and there are 1,272 listeners listed with 21,800 plays :) (can that many people be wrong? ;))
    Cheers,

ok, evidently, you already have the correct artist The White Birch in your library as well as their album Come Up for Air in this page. so all else aside, your scrobbles should go in this page now.

so the only conclusion i can come up with is that those 600+ scrobbles of 'come up for air' attributed to 'various artists' are historical data (i briefly skimmed through the 7 days to 12 mths charts and didn't find it in those) and perhaps sometime more recently, this problem was then corrected, and the subsequent 179 scrobbles began landing on the proper page. at least, that's my guess.

not much can be done at the moment as far as merging the scrobbling data goes, maybe later on. but at the very least, the problem shouldn't happen anymore now?

  • Yes, you're right, I was listening to this album a year and a half ago. So I'll just wait and see - if the problem is resolved - fine, if it's not - fine ;) It's not that it matters that much anyway ;)
Thanks a lot for your time and answers!

    problem with tags

Hi, I would like to know how to add tags for album like this:
    fmera said:
    one example.

I had this album James Bond and when I add tags of that album and artist - for ex. Monty Norman Orchestra, it doesn't work. It says, that there is no almub like this - and the name is right.....

    thank you...

where are you seeing this error message? afaict, from the recent activities, both the album and the track can be tagged.

On my last.fm window/player on my computer (the music is played by winamp) - it doesn't show the image of the album and when I click on the name of the album I see this, even if here I can see the album.
And I already have some soundtracks album on my list and it worked...

The album works only, when I put there "Various artist" but I want there the real artist and they are shown there.

i'm not fully clear about the problem you've mentioned with your player, but the first link you gave (this) is incorrect.

The album works only, when I put there "Various artist" but I want there the real artist and they are shown there.
to tag the album, or to tag the track using the dropdown menu next to the track title, go here:
    http://www.last.fm/music/Various+Artists/The+Best+of+Bond...+James+Bond

or you can also tag the track here:
    http://www.last.fm/music/Monty+Norman+Orchestra/_/James+Bond+Theme

as you can see, while the tracks are listed under their respective artists, the album itself is listed under "Various Artists" and you can't do anything to change that presently.

that's the problem - that it is incorrect...

In the track are these tags:
    Artist: Monty Norman Orchestra
Album: The Best of Bond... James Bond
Name of the track: James Bond Theme

And the player don't recognize the album. I know, that it isn't album of Monty Norman orchestra. But at the album, which is under "Various Artists", there is written the name of Monty Norman Orchestra. And it is there as a link, so I thought, that if there it is written it should be written also in my library/or in my player... and in my library it looks like this. So it doesn't reconize the album even if the album recognize the artist and the track...

It isn't so important, but I was just wandering, if it's possible to put it somehow together - the album and the artist...

i see what you mean. i think this needs staff attention though, if your player (last.fm player?) is pointing to a bad link.

as for the "album-less" track page in your library you mentioned (i have many pages like that too), it may or may not be intended that way, but the staff would have to comment.

    now i'm seeing the problem...

@last.fm staff: there's an error in the way the client links to albums if the artists the albums are attributed to are different than that of the played track, such as in compilations or "various artists" albums:

    example #1:
the album link in the client for It May Be Winter Outside (But in My Heart It's Spring) points to
    http://www.last.fm/music/Love%20Unlimited/Love%20Songs (bad link)

    instead of:
    http://www.last.fm/music/Barry+White/Love+Songs (the correct link)

    example #2:
the album link in the client for TocarNever Too Much points to
    http://www.last.fm/music/Mary+J.+Blige/So+Amazing%3A+An+All-Star+Tribute+To+Luther+Vandross (bad link)

    instead of:
    http://www.last.fm/music/Various+Artists/So+Amazing%3A+An+All-Star+Tribute+To+Luther+Vandross (the correct link)

pretty sure this wasn't the case before.

moved this case to bug report: wrong album links in client (client support forum).
