No. They know about the issue, calling them and actually taking up their time will not get it done any faster. Posting on a forum lets them know by the increasing post count that it is an issue, without them actually having to deal with shutting us up :)

  • 2 months? Doubt it.

Almost 2 months now? I've done quite a lot of programming, and I doubt they have been working on this problem, unless they are just completely stumped.

I decided to look up the format of GIF89a to compare my original GIF with the one I uploaded. It seems that my original GIF is getting reformatted with several changes. This couldn't happen by chance; the code they are using is actually reading the GIF file and rewriting it.
----A couple key bit fields are changed throughout the file along with the global color table, which has been completely rewritten. Also, the Netscape application extension has been removed along with the graphic control extension block(which controls animation). Animation would still be pointless, as only one image layer remains after the GIF file gets rewritten.

What does this information tell me?
-It is not an error in the upload because the entire file is organized properly and includes a 'trailer' block indicating the end of the GIF data.
-Very specific changes are made to the GIF file; this indicates that once the original is uploaded, the server uses a utility of some sort to extract the original data and re-encode it to meet certain standards.

The comments I read about transparent images having layers overlapping gives me some more information.
This suggests that the specific utility/code-snippet used to parse and rewrite the GIF file is compacting all of the separate image 'layers' into a single image. However, I tested this with a transparent and animated GIF, but the uploaded picture became blank and completely transparent.

All I can say is that there is a code-snippet/utility the server is using to parse incoming GIF files. This code is removing several things from the GIF file and then rewriting the file. While I can sit around and point out all the specific changes and what they mean, I still have no clue if the programmers setup the code incorrectly, or if it is all intentional.

Even though I understood nothing from the previous post, it gave me a slight implication that they lied to us :O

However, I'm posting just to keep track. And to admire all those pictures :D Anyway, the longer it takes, I'm more curious, and that's not good. I do weird things because of my pathological curiousity. I'm on the brink of flying to last.fm HQ, bursting inside with a pleading look of an injured kitty and yelling "I WANTZ MY GIFZ BCAK!!1!!!1!sin2+cos2!!1!"

    Wow, thanks for that!

I'm not sure if this is completely the case, but when a user seems to know more than a member of staff. That is certainly a problem.

They're extremely busy trying to get the beta site ready to launch, so I doubt too if they're working it it. Yet. They will, because all animated avatars are broken on the beta site (being different sizes and all), even the old ones, so it will certainly be addressed at some point. It's just not a priority yet.

While I can sit around and point out all the specific changes and what they mean, I still have no clue if the programmers setup the code incorrectly, or if it is all intentional.
I do. They've acknowledged it's a bug and will be fixed.

That is, the part where they parse the GIFs is intentional (they're cached on their site in the various sizes needed, so they don't have to re-size on the fly), but the part that breaks animation is an acknowledged bug. Oh, it also breaks transparency, at least on the beta site. (Transparent avatars have a black background.)

  • What the HELL!? Fix this already. D:<

And a garage made from the souls of little children?

They're probably too busy right now working on the beta version of Last.fm. In time I'm sure it will be fixed, I guess there's nothing we can do except be patient.
