where can i vote for their correct name?

If the option is not on the artist page it doesn't need to be voted on.

But when you come to japanese artist, they have often 2 or 3 different artistpages here.

It would be great to merge all this pages with the same artist into one, ones for all!

I agree, it's the same with Masami Ueda and 上田雅美 among others I'm sure.
Although some artists are already correctly appended, like 大谷幸. Hopefully this new system is a sign of things to come!

  • The Beatles is actually up for a vote on their page, the vote is if the "The" should be there or not (it should!).

As for merging artist Masami Ueda into 上田雅美, I don't think they're at that point yet. Just worry about spelling Masami Ueda correctly on it's page and 上田雅美 on it's page.

  • Very good, with the change to 'This is a valid Artist'
    I am happily satisfied.

  • How is the "confidence" data generated? (The number that appears when you hover over each choice.)

I have noticed that for classical composers there is often a choice to vote for a particular artist playing that composer's work. If the eventuality is to have tracks appear as by the artist with the most votes, then if the particular artist wins the votes, then everything tagged by a listener as by that composer regardless of the actual artist will go to the artist who won the votes.

  • Read the blog again... the majority of the posts in this thread are based on a very incorrect assumption.

These votes are ONLY for comparison to the data last.fm has been generating with fingerprinting and such. Merges and such will NOT be done based on these votes.

Parts of the blog suggest that merging is a possibility down the road:

We’re not doing any auto-corrections until we’re sure how sure we are ...

    What the future holds

Correct data displayed when scrobbling, even if your tags suck.

Consolidate the stats on Last.fm so that Artist top tracks, and ultimately user charts and all other charts are corrected.

A blog link for those of us too lazy / busy / whatever to go to the "what's new" section.

I have some trepidation in using this for things like Odds and The Odds, as each are valid artists, but a lot of the former's tracks are scrobbled under the latter's name. (I fall into all three groups as a listener - some of my tracks were mistagged and I didn't notice it.)

To ward off the obvious comments: Yes, I have voted "valid artist" for both of these.

Did I hear that right? Mondegreens - for the misheard word.
Like Odds? Can't get better than Even Odds!

If the option is not on the artist page it doesn't need to be voted on.

Do you mean there are no alternative names or you've picked the correct one on your own?

I'm asking because e.g. Бумбокс, С.К.А.Й. or some other artists with names in cyrillic and probably in many other foreign alphabets don't offer an option to vote.

@erikfrey: What about the people who have Pink in their charts but really meant P!nk? I mean, I didn't even know there was a band called that way... and it happens to a lot of people.

I'd really love to have my stats clear and not to see the Pink band picture within my charts.

    Have a nice day!

  • Could the alternatives perhaps be linked to their respective artist pages?

That way, when I'm sorting Natalie Imbruglia from one of Natatlie Imbruglia, Natalie Imbrugia, Natialie Imbruglia, Natalie Ambruglia, &c., &c., &c., I could quickly pop by and whack a vote on the rest of them.

The word "vote" suggests to me that popularity could win over fact...

This vote isn't the be all and end all as far as I can tell, merely a yardstick to measure whether the data they have mined and whatever they have set in place to mine it are accurate.

Basically, what Dankine said :) we're trying to balance voting with our own data, and authority sources like MusicBrainz, to see what combination yields the best results.

Then there are artists like Nirvana and Daniel There are streamable tracks from 2 of them on one page. Look at how many are mentioned as having used the name on the respective wikis! That's a mess that simply is impossible to straighten out. Well, unless last.fm decided to use an extra vector such as coloring instances of the American Nirvana in blue and the UK Nirvana in orange for example. The Brazilian Daniel could be yellow while the Spanish one could be red. The system would have to then recognize which color should be scrobbled by looking at album and track names.

One of the things mentioned in the blog was disambiguation. If disambiguation is put into place as, for example, on Wikipedia, then when you search for an artist you might go to a page listing the different artists by the same name with distinguishing notes. Here is an example of a Wikipedia disambiguation page. Each individual artist page could then link you to the disambiguation page in case you are looking at the wrong artist.

  • Its nice to see on the 'Daath page. BUT you can't vote for the ACTUAL correct artist! There are TWO incorrect options now!

LOL I was about to ask that.
And what about KT Tunstall were the first two choices are the same - at least to my eyes.

No, the second one has two spaces between KT and Tunstall

    KT _ _ Tunstall

  • I manage th page for this artist: caesar romero, and both options up for voting are WRONG. I worry that people will vote for the second option (the misspelled "Ceasar Romero") because at first sight it looks like an identical, but capitalised version of the artist's name. Why can't I simply correct it? I am managing the artist's details on their behalf!!
It should be : "Caesar Romero" (capitalised, but spelled like the current uncapitalised version)...

Why is there no feature on Music Manager that allows one to correct the name of artists that one is managing on Last FM?

(also, other issue...and I already posted about this elsewhere on this forum, but may be worth mentioning again: since the voting feature appeared on the page, the playcount and listeners have gone drastically down. What's going on?)

That's a completely unrelated issue which is being discussed e.g. here, a bug that doesn't have anything to do with this voting feature.

  • Foreverautumn... apologies for adding that further issue to my post and thanks for redirecting me to the correct thread!:o)

First half of my post is still relevant and an issue, for me, though...

I wonder if 2 names of an artists merge into the "correct" one, if I had listened to the "wrong" one, will it change to the "correct" one on my charts?

I have started a self-support group concerning Russell Allen & Jorn Lande and their two albums. The whole trouble is I don't know myself how to correctly spell the name of the project.

I have discovered a few funny thing beginning with 37 different last.fm pages for individual variations of the name and that the people who claim to tag "as on the cover" has not seen the original cover in their life (apart from the 300px wide interent image) because thay would have notice the first names in the small print.

    http://www.last.fm/group/I+love+the+music+by+Russell+Allen+and+Jorn+Lande%2C+but+I+can%27t+spell+their+names

Any comments are welcome and good luck to you, last.fm users & staff :)
